The Sopranos

most tv sucks these days, but there are some shining examples of good writing, acting, camera work, etc... we call those Deadwood and Arrested Development. Family Guy sucks ass, though...

Sopranos Not Bound for Big Screen

Post by Newsbot »

Code: Select all

For fans holding out hope that the polarizing ending to the Sopranos series finale was simply the set-up to a big-screen outing for the first family of crime, creator David Chase has three words for you: Do stop believin'.

The series mastermind turned viewer punching bag has debunked the popular theory that the show's seemingly unresolved ending was meant to serve as a launching pad for an oft-rumored future film, claiming instead that the don's story—though not necessarily the don himself—was all but dead.

"I don't think about [a movie] much," Chase told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I never say never. An idea could pop into my head where I would go, 'Wow, that would make a great movie,' but I doubt it.

"I'm not being coy. If something appeared that really made a good Sopranos movie and you could invest in it and everybody else wanted to do it, I would do it. But I think we've kind of said it and done it."

And then there's the minor issue of Chase and cohorts killing off, in this season alone, many of the key players who would've been expected to appear in a film version of the show. But that hasn't stopped him from toying with a movie idea in the past.

One potential premise, he told the Star-Ledger, was "going back to a day in 2006 that you didn't see." Under that scenario, some of our favorite offed mobsters would still be kicking. But, as Chase observed, there would be some logistical issues. Tony's children, for instance, "would be older than they were [on the show] and you would know that Tony doesn't get killed" so there wouldn't be much suspense.

"It's got problems."

As for that instantly infamous and abrupt final scene, in which Tony Soprano waits at Bloomfield's ice cream parlor for his family to arrive one by one, all the while tension building as suspicious patrons enter and daughter Meadow struggles to parallel park, Chase could care less about "all the Monday morning quarterbacking."

While hundreds of viewers spent their Sunday nights alternately phoning their respective cable companies to complain about shoddy service and cursing Chase's name, the man himself—no fool, clearly—had long since fled the country, having set off for a vacation with his wife in France.

"I have no interest in explaining, defending, reinterpreting or adding to what is there," he told the newspaper of the series-ending, Journey-scored scene. "I hear some people were very angry and others were not, which is what I expected."

"No one was trying to be audacious, honest to God. We did what we thought we had to do. No one was trying to blow people's minds or thinking, 'Wow, this'll [tick] them off.'"

Not that he would change the ending in any way or opt to splice in another of the several final scenes that were filmed.

"People get the impression that you're trying to [mess] with them, and it's not true. You're trying to entertain them."

Which, aside from perhaps one overenthusiastic edit job, he did, for six seasons.

"It's been the greatest career experience of my life," Chase said. "There's nothing more in TV that I could say or would want to say."

[mess], this auto-censor is [ticking] me off.

I personally didn't see it (or pretty much any of the previous six seasons, give or take an episode here and there) but I know what happens at the end and the purposeful ambiguity of the final scene. So my question to you, loyal viewers, is this. What do you THINK happened next? Did the Family Soprano enjoy their onion rings and milk shakes and then head home. Or did someone come out of the bathroom and pop caps?

Paulie never reconsidered passing up his golden opportunity. He died a few years later of natural causes.

The FBI dude said "We're gonna win this" not because he was rooting for Tony, but because he'd been working with the anti-mob division again after Tony came to him for help. Not long after the finale, they finally busted Tony on some charges that meant something (in this case, Phil's murder).

Patsy took over Tony's crew after he went to jail.

Sil remained in his coma for a few years, then made a seemingly miraculous recovery.

After being convicted, Tony spent a few years in prison. He was eventually able to be released on appeal. He and Silvio decided that their time had passed, and decided to follow up on Christopher's dream. They went to Hollywood, where AJ (still a selfish, shallow SOB, but now with contacts in Hollywood) helped them produce a string of hit movies based upon their experiences.

Janice remained a snide bitch.

Uncle Junior never came out of the sanitarium, and Tony never made any further efforts to reconcile with him.

Carmella stuck by Tony, never learning that he'd personally killed Christopher and ordered Adriana to be killed.

THAT's an interesting theory that i hadn't considered... although i like the idea that he's just personally invested in the goings on in his old beat, but that's interesting.

on an aside, i think they should spin off agent harris into his own show as a part of the homeland security division. it would make a nice counterpoint to the "blow a lot of shit up, everything moves really fast" sensationalist version of terrorism prevention that is 24.
Life is short. STUNT IT!

Comments on the finale (as per EP's wishes): I'm with Chux. They simply pushed "pause" on the lives of the characters - ending a TV series doesn't always have to mean that each character has to be "dealt with" in an ultimate fashion. The "suspicious" dude in the diner was just that, some tool who recognized Tony and wanted to have a good look at him.

I'd like to hear from the writers about what the significance of Maedo's parking troubles and late arrival at the dinner were.... or if there wasn't any.

I had a bit of a "What the fuck???" moment, like almost eveyone I'd assume - but I have no problem with the way they left it.

Was it kinda cheesy that they used JOURNEY for the finale, though ?

Good tune, don't get me wrong...80s cheese, though. If it was a 50s/60s/70s tune it woulda been "coooool" but 80s is still cheese to me.

Great show though, kinda of a fucked up ending but I liked it.

The Journey bothered me a little bit as well - but only because it had been used on a Scrubs episode not too long ago and seemed "borrowed" or something.... they should have used "Push It" by Salt & Pepa.

I could Push It when it comes to Meadow...hot damn, LORD ABOVE !!!!

Speaking of Meadow, I just thought of Finn and how much he looked like Joe Perry and the way they worked that into the Vito storyline. Damnit I love this show, it will always be a classic !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's so hard - between Sopranos and Deadwood I can't declare a "Best Ever" tv series. Not that there's any real "need" to declare such a thing - I think both series' forced the other's creators to be at their best - and we ALL benefited greatly.

Fuck, those were good shows. And now it's John from Cincinnati????? :frus:

I give The Sopranos the nod as my favorite if only because of the much longer body of work...if Milch played in the Black Hills for another 4 seasons and brought in more and more of these wonderful characters, it quite possibly would have topped The Sopranos.

I love them both though and don't feel the need to declare one better than the other. :D

I keep crossing my fingers that HBO and Milch will reconsider Deadwood, especially since John from Cincinatti barely survived its first season before getting canned.

I finally saw the final episode last night. Netflix has been great for catching up on TV. The show was never quite as good after Livia died, but the last season was up there with the best. I wonder when the movie'll be out.

RIP DEADWOOD

In press interviews for THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING, Ian has been quoted as declaring DEADWOOD's demise. Sorry to say, it appears to be true. HBO had a five year lease on Melody Ranch. That lease is ending. The sets which have sat dormant, and around which JOHN FROM CINCINNATI was filmed, are being dismantled and leased props/costumes are being returned.

It is over. That beautiful chestnut stud-horse has died, I will now stop beating it.

I once swore to live my life without regrets. I did not want to come to the end, look back at what had ensued and feel sorrow for things I didn't do nor complete. Well... when I reach that Autumn, I will have now have at least one regret. However, I salve myself with the knowledge that I did everything I knew to do in order to keep it going. I was never quiet sure if I was Don Quixote attacking that windmill or Sisyphus rolling that rock - never the less I tried, but to no avail.

I will now roll and cinch my whip, retrieve my saddle, and limp off down the trail into the waiting sunset.

For those of you who cared enough to pay attention, thank you. Maybe, someday, I will again be a part of something that plays at that level and is that good.

Speaking of - do any of you watch FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS on NBC? I just got turned on to the show via the boxset of season 1 -- it is awesome. I highly recommend it."

I know more than one of you have a hard-on for this show. They are releasing a Complete Series Boxset for the holiday season. Amazon has it for $255 I think. Suggested retail is a whopping $399

But as a WB employee, I saw it at the WB store $231. I have only seen about five episodes total, but I was wondering if I should get it.
