Re: What are you reading right now?
Two months later and I'm still reading Lord of the Flies. I stalled on that one.

Re: What are you reading right now?
One book I can highly recommend you all read is The Road, by Cormac McCarthy (who wrote No Country For Old Men). Fantastic book. Simply magnificent. Best book I have read in a loooong time.
They are releasing the film adaptation at the end of November, so you have plenty of time to read it before the movie comes out, and I suggest you do. It is a quick read, at around 250 pages.
I started reading The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold (recommendation by mom), and it was good, but I had to put it on hold. Definitely plan on finishing it, hopefully sometime soon.

"Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."

I really want to read the Road. I guess it tops lists as the best book of the last 50 years or something.

It sure does, according to EW and other sources I have come across. It truly is a masterpiece.

Re: What are you reading right now?
How about that. Borrowed it from a friend last weekend. Already finished.
Mythically haunting. I can't even begin to talk about all the ways this book makes you think.
If none of you haven't read this yet ( and I know thats about 90% of you) go out and buy this book. It's bloody brilliant. And it IS a very quick read. I read it in about three sittings of two or three hours, and I have a short attention span. When I was in the middle of Dark Tower, I could only read 30-50 pages before I had to stop and go play video games or watch a movie or read comics. But this book, I just wanted to keep reading, and was miffed when I had to stop.
I will talk more tomorrow about certain aspects of it that I absolutely loved. Can't wait for the movie.

Re: What are you reading right now?
I finished "Blackwater: Rise of America's Most Powerful Private Army" and am now reading Al Gore's "Assault on Reason".
Yes, I actually thought the 2nd book was about me. Talk about disappointing.
Edited: I'll read "The Road" right away - but it better be fucking good you yokels.

I thought both of those looked interesting, JJ, but I've learned to wait on current affairs books until they're in paperback. They always add stuff and it pisses me off if I get it when it first comes out and am missing a chapter.

Currently reading "What the best college teachers do" by Ken Bain
It basically explains a longitudinal study to find out how the best teachers "teach"
It's pretty good.

Re: What are you reading right now?
I've been slowing down a bit.
I've been reading a crime novel while on break at work, but it isn't really holding my attention all that well. I've only got like 1/4 or less to go.
And I've also (finally) been reading A Cather In The Rye, mostly on the can. So far I like it. I figured I'd feel it was overhyped crap.

Re: What are you reading right now?
I thought the same about Catcher in the Rye when I read it, about seven years ago. It was a pleasant surprise to see it lived up to the hype. Now I feel like I have to buy every copy I see. Totally unrelated, but Paul McCartney is going to be here next week. You think he would sign that for me? Then I could send it to Jodie Foster and show her how much I love her!

Re: What are you reading right now?
i started to re-read 'zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance' the other day. it doesn't seem as slow as the last time i read it. it's a hell of a book, very heady. your eyes are tired after a good commute-worth of stuffing the words through your eyes.

Re: What are you reading right now?
Been reading Terry Pratchett's Monstrous regiment for what seems like years. I'm finding his more recent books quite hard going as they all seem to have similar plots. god ove the guy with his suffrage of Parkinsons disease but surely his editor could point him in a direction away from books he's already written. Going postal and Making money are almost identical. Monstrous regiment seems to be following old ground too and not going anywhere fast. and I hope he hasn't done the same multiple ending thing, the books that don't know when to end.
It's a shame really as I've always really enjoyed Pratchett's books. wisdom, insight, great action sequences and belly laughs tinged with sobering moments. The recent offerings feel like the rantings of a very angry man rather than his usual wry take on human psychology.

I have never read any of your posts, but from what I can learn I should say that for people who like the kind of posts you deliver, they are just the kind of posts such people like.
