Re: cable is expensive
Y'know, vyn has made me question more our cable service, and KH has made me see how competitive the others are.
I think it's time for some serious investigating. There's a good chance Time Warner might lose out, especially after this "upgrade" to the stone age technology.
If I go with Dish, are you in sales, or do you get some credit? And do you guys partner with someone for internet access out this way?

Re: cable is expensive
We have some DSL partners like AT&T, Frontier, etc, you would have to call the phone company more than likely. We also have a Satellite Internet service, but if you can get something else, its better off since it is expensive.
I work tech support, I do sales etc but dont make commissions. Whatever you do, if you decide to get Dish, then please call Dish Network directly, not one of these ads that come in your val-pak shit. They say yes to everything. If you want, call me tell me what you are looking for and I will tell you what to ask for when you call up to get service(again, if you go that route)

Hello, my name is Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct Unimatrix Zero, and I've been paying TOO much for cable tv.
Hey, to all you satellite gooroos out there, can you get wireless internet through a satellite tv provider?

Re: cable is expensive
DirecTV wants a crazy amount of cash for internet, so I just have DSL through my phone company.
Re: cable is expensive
I have wireless through my cable company (Charter Communications) and I really love it, but I don't want their cable tv, it just sucks! I no longer have a land line like Verizon, instead, I got Vonage which I run through my internet because no matter who you call, where, or for how long, it's always 28.98 per month. Before that I was spending 60 - 70 bones on verizon + att long distance, not to mention my cellular bill too. I didn't need all that phone crap, especially for someone who hates talking on the phone in the first place!Rogue II wrote:DirecTV wants a crazy amount of cash for internet, so I just have DSL through my phone company.
I need to do some research on this direct/satellite tv stuff...

Re: cable is expensive
do you mean wireless through a router and cable internet? that's different from satellite wireless, which is a completely wireless system, no router. you just connect a PCI card to your computer and that allows you to connect to the 'net.Seven wrote:I have wireless through my cable company (Charter Communications) and I really love it, but I don't want their cable tv, it just sucks!
oh, hell yes. vonage is the balls. i've had it since 2003. never had huge problems. i've only had a few instances of bad connections that are all matrixy-digital sounding, but that's not all that common.I no longer have a land line like Verizon, instead, I got Vonage which I run through my internet because no matter who you call, where, or for how long, it's always 28.98 per month.
Life is short. STUNT IT!
Re: cable is expensive
Satellite internet is expensie, 50 bucks at a minimum and it will go out in bad weather. It is aklso shared bandwidth which means at peak hours it slows down. Also you are limited to uploads and downloads under a fair access policy. If you want to pay alot for 512k DL speed, then sat. internet is the best way to go.

Re: cable is expensive
If you already have a cell phone, why are you paying for any other phone, be it Vonage or Landline ?
I don't get it.
I don't get it.
Re: cable is expensive
I just want wireless anyway it comes because I do most of my work on my laptop and I like to be able to move around the house, go outside, but after what I say KH say...512K d/l for 50 bones, I have 3mb d/l now for 50 bones and they are getting rid of it and automatically upgrading me to 5mb d/l.vynsane wrote: do you mean wireless through a router and cable internet? that's different from satellite wireless, which is a completely wireless system, no router. you just connect a PCI card to your computer and that allows you to connect to the 'net.

I really DO love Charter's internet service, so I guess it's worth keeping the cable tv as well for Granny.
for me it's because I live with granny, who actually does have a cell phone but never uses it or has it on. She's old timin' that waySleazer wrote:If you already have a cell phone, why are you paying for any other phone, be it Vonage or Landline ?

Re: cable is expensive
I'm reconsidering this again after a brief outage earlier. Working (and goofing off) from home isn't as easy if the internet goes out. It's not frequent by any means, but I know they're not keeping up with HD as they could be, and they don't offer a few channels I'd like. I got a flier from Verizon (who still send about five a week), and was searching the options.
First, I resent Verizon makes me enter every fucking thing about myself before it can give me any info. I tell you my zip code, that should be enough. You don't need my mother's maiden name.
It looks like we were grandfathered into some package at Time Warner that is no longer offered. That's all I can figure from searching for anything comparable. To get rid of HBO would actually cost us more.
The other three are cheaper, but that comes at a price: local channels. All three (some free, some for a negligible extra charge) offer the LA channels, in both regular and HD. No one offers the Palm Springs channels. LA news doesn't cover the area I live in, and Palm Springs news is simply more professional. I'm closer to PS, but, with TW, get the local stations from both cities (minus the Palm Springs Fox affiliate, for some strange reason). Our HOA doesn't permit old-timey antennae, so I wouldn't be able to get them at all with one of the other three options.
I think I'm gonna just call up TW and tell them about the other offers I get constantly so they can try to match the deals. They're not perfect, but I guess I'm willing to pay a bit more for channels that actually cover this area. They don't have to know I'm not planning to jump ship.

Re: cable is expensive
Of course, I post this, and go to their site to see what they offer, and see they're planning to roll out "consumption based billing" for internet. Christfarts.

Re: cable is expensive
On a similar topic (but not really), I recently discovered that we get about twice the number of channels that I thought we did. They're peppered in with a bunch of channels that we don't get, so I had no idea. I've been recording a lot of movies on the DVR, thanks to getting the Encore channels, so that's good.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.
