Re: star wars
I looked at the Toy Fair Star Wars pics. Did I miss something or are they abandoning the 3.75" Black Series? Seems like they could have milked it for at least part of the year until the new movie line kicked in.

Re: star wars
For the first times since the brand was reintroduced in 1995, they had NOTHING to show at Toy Fair. So either they have nothing OR they didn't want to show any pics because all they've been working on is the new movie shit OR they're now saving them for San Diego.
I've seen mention of a few OT Black Series figures left to come - Yavin Leia & Chewie are 2 and I can't recall what else.

Re: star wars
That's not how ToyFair works. ToyFair is intended to get retailers like WM, Target, TRU etc to place massive orders for the coming year. They wouldn't "keep things secret" and hold off until SDCC in August. Even if they didn't have actual figures, they'd have a presentation with slides and pics and stuff.
SDCC and other cons are the fan wank showcase. Stringing retailers with millions of dollars to spend along isn't germaine to staying in business.
Granted, the SW line probably has more leeway in not showing product, but still..

Re: star wars
i saw some figures based on Rebels and, the larger black series figures - IG-88, some clonetrooper, han and luke in stormtrooper disgueses, boushh leia, emperor palpatine, and then two larger boxed sets with hoth luke + wampa and hoth han + taun-taun.
if anything, they had any TFA based toys hidden from press and only available to buyers. i know the LEGO booth had an entire back half that i wasn't shown, so...

Yeah, it was pretty fucking frustrating. I mean, since I live like 45 minutes away, it wasn't too bad, but for people who traveled here specifically for this, it's got to be a kick in the teeth. No new figures aside from those Hero Mashers, and they already revealed the Bladebuilders and Furby to news outlets earlier in the week, so there wasn't really anything to see.vynsane wrote:i saw some figures based on Rebels and, the larger black series figures - IG-88, some clonetrooper, han and luke in stormtrooper disgueses, boushh leia, emperor palpatine, and then two larger boxed sets with hoth luke + wampa and hoth han + taun-taun.

So figure-wise, it seems like they've already shown everything pre-TFA. These already-revealed figures will have to fill about a six-month gap before the movie stuff hits on September 4. (Only one company showed us any TFA-related stuff, and we had to sign an NDA about it. It wasn't a lot to see, but it was fun to see it.) Vyn mentioned all the 6" Black Series we know about (there are three clone troopers on the way).
There are 13 new announced 3 3/4" Black Series:
*Princess Leia (Yavin Ceremony)
*Chewbacca
*Darth Vader (Yoda's Test)
*Jon "Dutch" Vander (Gold Leader)
*Captain Rex
*Clone Commander Wolffe
*Clone Commander Doom
*Clone Commander Thorn
*Han Solo in Carbonite
*Princess Leia (Boushh Disguise)
*Mosep Binneed
*Jawas (two-pack)
*C-3PO
C-3PO is some kind of repack, and it sounds like a couple other repacks are coming as well. Then there's still more Rebels and 5-POA stuff coming as well.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Same here, except I'd consider the Carbonite Han if it is a huge improvement over previous versions.anarky wrote:So, Mosep, Jawas, and nothing else. Got it.
I can understand the new Yavin Leia because it has been so long since the first one. But, what was so wrong with the last Boushh Leia that warrants a new one? Are they just making Dutch Vander again to get the use out of the Rebel pilot mold again?

Re: star wars
Mosep is kinda cool. I was just in my junk room and dug out what figures I have left after dumping most of my collectuion. I was quite surprised to find I actually own Hermi Odle and Yarna. Thought I gave up collecting before then. Anyway, going through what I had I realised I basically have Cantina and Jabba's palace figures. Thought I'd check up on what I've missed. Made a list. Went to check prices. Discovered some are going for over £40 resale.
Fuck that in half. It's really going to bug me now that I don't have these two scenes complete. Either I bite the bullet and bankrupt myself or I dump everything.
Also 5POA? Are hasbro making toys for retards now?

Re: star wars
I don't know. They claimed it was a way to keep costs down on figures for kids, while selling the Whatever Basic Figures Are Called This Week line going at a slightly higher price for grownups.
Trouble is, they introduced the shoddy 6" figures at the same time, and keep the whole "we have to make what kids will buy" policy and shitty distribution and case assortments on the basic figures. Also, basics are very heavy into resculpts; the less necessary, the better. I've bought two figures in the last two or three years, and one of them was because she (Torryn Farr, Jodie Foster's head on a Leia body and therefore a huge slap in the face to everyone who wanted the character made) was on clearance for $3.
Couple that with price hikes (basic figures were around $5-6 when ROTS came out, and some places are, no shit, asking $17 for them now) and the complete lack of anything but 5-POA figures in the Rebels line (and, from the look of things, the E7 line as well), and basic figures are damned close to dead.
If you know anyone who collects Transformers, Jargo, see if you can check out one of the recent Aerialbots or Stunticons (or, soon, Protectobots) from the current Combiner Wars line. And consider that these larger, far more articulated, figures that can turn into convincing vehicles, robots, arms, and legs cost LESS than basic SW figures at many stores. And they come with a full comic book. I know there are costs involved with licensing, but they're not THAT much when broken down per unit.

Re: star wars
I laughed very hard when I saw the black series Sgt. Doallyn figure with the pinhead and weird elongated body.
There may be a resurgance in interest in the OT after TFA. People who hate the sequels like they hated the prequels will clamour for more OT stuff. I don't see a need for super articulated action figures n small scale but 5poa is ridiculous. adding in hinged elbow and knee joints at least means some variation and allows the figures to sit.
Luckily I'm interested in only a small portion of SW. I wish I'd specialised all those years ago and not wasted so much money on this stuff. I still have an extra Saga Imperial shuttle boxed which I might sell to fund my purchases of some figures. It isn't mint but someone somewhere must be mug enough to buy it.

Re: star wars
Today in my inbox was an email from Hasbrotoyshop. It was an ad for a modular Avengers playset. It looks like it is made up of a combination of plastic and cardboard and comes with 2 figures. I'll assume they are 5 POA. It would have been nice if they did it for Star Wars. Probably too late now.

Re: star wars
When you see the Avengers stuff in the store, you'll realize how cheap & crappy it actually looks/is. The concept of the playset is a good one, I will admit, would have been awesome when they were making toys of better quality - but I think the price would have been pretty high.

Re: star wars
I had an idea. I might forget finishing up certain scenes and just customise some swoops/speederbikes in 'gonzo' colour schemes for fun and then whatever figures I have can just be spectators to a 'wizard' swoop race. The last couple of nights as I wind down before bed I've been sketching swoops. Trying to work out what the difference between a swoop and speeder bike is. As far as I can tell it's the ANH SE cantina approach. Prior to that it was speeder bikes and after that it was swoops. So same thing but prior to ANH SE they didn't have an official name. They were just bike style landspeeders.
Anyhoo, I've developed four classes of them for my purposes. 1. solid case over steering vane arms which gives them a sporty look, 2. circular cockpit where the rider has a canopy enclosing them, 3. no steering vane arm but vanes instead attached to the main fuselage, 4. the usual arrangement of long front steering vane arms. From that I've drawn up 26 different designs which is beginning to look like wacky races. Especiall with the colours I've given them as I only have six felt tipped pens and had to try and make do with no yellow and mostly reds, blues, greens, purples and a sort of dirty mix of those. I already customised a SOTE swoop a bit by removing that stupid side gun and painting it a rusty brown. I want to go further and properly kitbash. I reckon if nothing else a collection of cool hover bikes will look mean on a shelf.

I always took "swoop" as a term for a customized speeder bike like "chopper" in english.

Re: star wars
*shrug* I looked it up on wookieepedia and it says there that the difference is speed. Swoops have their brakes removed and can travel at 600 mph. Somehow I doubt the human body could take the forces exerted on it with no back and neck support at those speeds. tsk. I hadn't realised that SOTE was an LFL concocted thing. I always thought it was some independent venture licensed by LFL. Apparently GL said it was the sort of thing he'd have made into a movie in the late '80's. Thank fuck he didn't.
