The purpose of this thread is simple: Someone names a band they like (or want to know more of) and don't have much by. Where do they start? What are the essential recordings? Obviously, we won't agree on everything, which is why it's a discussion.
I'll kick off with one I'm a little embarrassed about, considering myself a metalhead:
MOTORHEAD
For about ten years, this is all I've had. It's something that needs to be corrected. I've got "Ace of Spades," but am missing a lot of other stuff. As in "almost anything." It's not that I don't realize that "Lemmy vs God" is a trick question, since Lemmy is God, but I've just never scratched far beyond the surface as far as my own collection goes. Well, aside from "Born to Raise Hell" on the Airheads soundtrack (Lemmy, Ice-T, and the guy from Ugly Kid Joe).
1916 and Inferno both look good. (I'm picking based on the unusual title track of 1916 and, of course, The Deuce's favorite Motorhead song from Inferno.) Are those good "next steps," or is there something better? I want my neighbor's lawn to die, goddammit!
While we're on the subject of shocking and embarrassing holes in my metal collection, all I have from Judas Priest is this. It doesn't cover anything from non-Halford years (though I'm not sure if that's a problem or not). Many of the individual tracks I had on various cassettes back in the day, but this is the first time I've had them digitally. I forgot how great they were. I think a fear instilled in me as a kid that these guys in particular would get me sent to hell lingered longer than I thought at some subconscious level. But if they're in hell, I'll burn eternally to not miss out on this fucking awesome music.

Re: Where to begin with....
motorhead I would suggest in no particular order "Overkill", "Orgasmatron", "1916", "Bastards", maybe "Sacrifice"
Judas Priest that's tough, but Stained Class is strong, rocka-rolla is really fucked up in a cool way, "sin after Sin" is a weird huge anthemic kind of album... later albums are IMO hit-and-miss, like "Screaming for Vengeance" and "Defenders of the Faith" and I guess the earlier "Hell bent for Leather" (which is actually overall pretty good
the non-Halford stuff didn't do anything for me so I'd not worry.

Go and do whatever it takes to not see "Dark Place" or I will not hunt you all down, humourously.
