Finally read MAUS

Post by jjreason »

Well, part I anyhow. It's a good read, but I kinda think it gets all the praise because of the subject matter moreso than the execution. It's very spartan art-wise, but the pictures do work at telling the tale (imagine kirby or ditko era pencils done in ink - that's what we're talking about here)... but (as usual) it's the story that counts. [Aside - We do all know art plays second fiddle to story 100% of the time, right? Right.]

I'll be down with the 2nd volume, as it seems the story isn't anywhere near complete where I'm at right now. Anyone else checked it out?

I've got the set with both books.
I'd say its on par with Night as the best literature about the Holocaust.

Haven't read it in ages though.
Reading Magento Testament makes me want to go back and give it another read.

Definitely read both. The first isn't an especially great stand-alone. It's like reading the first half of Slaughterhouse-Five without the rest of the story.

DB, I've had Night on my "to read" list for a while. Since you recommend it so highly, it's moving up several notches.

At a little over 100 pages Night is short read and one of my favorite books of all time.
It's not a "fun" read obviously, but I think its a really powerful book.

Finished the 2nd part. The schematics of the ovens portion was absolutely chilling. As a two part whole, this was well worth the money & time spent.
