Okay, I have about a billion questions.

computers are cool - they are the reason you are here right now! Hopefully, JJReason can build one and prove once and for all, Canadians are somewhat intelligent.

No, it hasnt broken down KH, but the more I dink around with it, the more and more I want to know.

Topic 1 - Overclocking. Do I just do it to the max, or leave it at its native speed? I havent noticed any lag - Im still quite shocked at the speed of the thing. Where does this help?

Topic 2 - Firewalls. Im running the windows one as it will allow me to access my steam account to play Halflife (which I bought with xmas money to see how well games would work on this thing). I have an nvidia one as well, but disabled it when I read that only one should be working.

Topic 3 - Programs running in the background during normal tasks. In the old days, I couldn't monkey around too much while my PC was downloading, writing discs, etc. Now it seems like I can burn DVDs and while away the time viewing porn, without any decrease in the speed of the writing. Does this sort of behaviour fuck anything up? The discs I've written have all seemed to work fine - maybe I've answered my own question.

I'd ask the same thing about running the defragger and adaware - I used to shut everything down except windows to do these tasks, is that still the best way to do it?

Topic 4 - DVD writing speed. My burner seems to want to write at 8x. If I set it to "Turbo" mode (or whatever it's calle), is it much less likely to burn a good copy?

Topic 5- I forgot this one: I downloaded a Java update and it won't load. It's asking me to check the install notes and I can't find them. Anyone?

I know I'll be back later, thanks for your continued help.

I'm not an expert on most of that, but I'd recommend setting your burner at the lowest speed you can live with. Less chance of errors. I hate burning music CDs and then getting a fucking pause or drop-out in a song. I'm so anal I have to re-do the whole thing.

I got the Java sorted out - all I had to do was run the "offline" install and it's running fine.

Limewire, by they way, hasn't helped me with anything but a couple of tunes. I tried to download a game - twice - and both times my Norton nuked it as soon as the file was opened. Better that than the consequences I guess.

overclocking is really just for fun, unless you've got an incredible cooling setup. i know my machine right now lets me overclock slightly - i can bump up the FSB incrementally, and it lets me go from a 2.0Ghz to about a 2.25Ghz until it won't turn on again. i just have to open it up, reset the BIOS jumper and i'm back at the 2.0Ghz.

Yeah, I'm not really experiencing any lag or anything - I think that's mostly for guys who are hell-bent on being the fastest on Counterstrike. Is that Limewire experience pretty common? Is there any point in me trying to download anything bigger than regualar song, or will they always get deleted?

I hear that. I've kept it on my computer, but it's I have it set to only be running when I open it - having it on all the time is a recipe for disaster methinks.

I've never had that problem with Limewire jj. I've downloaded entire movies (all 6 of the Holy Trilogy to be exact) and have never had my Norton interfere with it. Try checking the security settings on it.

It's the zipped stuff, I figure. Everything compressed gets nuked by Norton, so there's no fucking sense in even trying. I was having a look at downloading King Kong - but it would have to run overnight I think, even on high speed.

Just FYI, I loaded up some new filesharing software - Shareaza - its free, claims to contain no spyware, no ads, low carb & seems to be pretty good so far.

Copy that. Let us know how you're making out once you've tried a few downloads.

So far, so good. Downloaded about 60 mp3 files,(all totally legal uncopyrighted material, of course[arrr]) all quite fast & no problems yet. Just about everything I wanted was there, although I didn't look for anything too obscure. Haven't tried any videos or software yet.
