Top Summer Film of 2011

We haven't done this in a couple years, but what do you think is going to be this years numero uno blockbuster runaway hit? And what do you think is gonna bomb? Feel free to argue and give reasons.

The list only allows for 10, so I pretty much stuck to genre films, although there a couple high profile animated films this year like Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Smurfs, but I highly doubt anybody would vote for them. I also had Priest on the list, but figured that had a snowball's chance, so I put Hangover 2 on instead. not that that has much higher chance but y'know....

Anyway, I think the highest grosser will be a toss up between TF3 and HP99. I think Pirates will get the bronze. Of the four Comic Book films, I think Thor will make the most and X-Men the least.

Of the ten films I think Cowboys will do the least business, and I honestly can't say if Super8 will surprise everyone and be a huge hit or a huge dud.

Keep in mind I'm asking $ amounts, not aesthetics. But you can chime in on those as well. Y'know, because Speed Racer was awesome and did horribly embarassingly shitty Box Office, while Transformers 2 was the highest grossing film the year it came out. So there's no accounting for (the lack of) Taste.

People are retarded so Tranformers 3 will be huge.

Smurfs will bomb. I know of no one who think it looks like anything but shit.

I'd agree with vyn, with Green Lantern probably having the next biggest shot at the big doofendanger.

The Pirate movie. Seems the most universal on the list.

Wow, domestically Hangover II is the highest grosser so far. Pirates is 2nd so far, but internationally has a HUGE lead over everything. And WOW FastFurious 5 is in third right now. Which isn't even one of the ten choices.

Of the three comic films, Thor is highest followed closely by X-Men, so I was half right. GL turned out to be a turd.

Super8 did marginally well, but nowhere near the top of the list.

Only four of the ten are left. I still think Harry Potter and TF are going to be First and Second. And Cap might have a chance just because of a lack of competition late in the summer. C&A is still a dark horse, but it may not be the bottom rung as I predicted.

Harry Potter is going to clean up. It might wind up being top 3 all time - you heard it here first :P

That's what I'm thinking. I don't know about Top 3, but this is a film franchise over a decade in the making. People who've never watched a Potter film or read a book are gonna come see how it all ends. And that's on top of an entire generation of kids who are now adults who DID read all the books and saw all the movies.
And the trailer gives me goosebumps.

I've read the first book and seen one movie (no idea what one it was) but I was totally unimpressed by both.

Much like Twilight and The Hobbit, I can't wait for the last film to come out just so its finally fucking over.

The first book was for eleven year olds, but if it didn't grab you enough to get going on #2 right away the series likely isn't for you (you're one in a million :P ).

I don't think I could recommend it any more strongly by the way, if you're ever stuck for books to read. #2 might not even float your boat, but I can pretty much guarantee the third book would have you hooked.

The book was ok. It was definitely a good kids book, but there was nothing there that gave me any desire to continue.

And when Adam told me "It starts getting good in book four," I told him, "If I have to read two more fucking books before it finally gets good, then fuck that."
Not a very compelling reason to continue.

Well I would say book 3 is pretty god damned good. Book 2 is good also, but it's written around the same level as #1, it's a quick read.

EDITED: I'm changing my answer to Cars 2, apparently it's #1 with a bullet up here even if it didn't make Rollo's far-seeing list.

Look, I explained in the first post that I left off a bunch of kiddie films and why. I have no doubt Pixar cleans up everytime they release a film. ToyStory3 was the big winner last year weren't it?

I'm laughing that GL had such a huge dropoff and all the DC apologists over tni are grousing that there's a 'Critics Conspiracy' devised by Disney to explain why their beloved GLs shitty movie is doing pisspoor at the BoxOffice. Occam's Razor would suggest its because the film is mediocre and got poor word of mouth. But no, it has to be one of several other explanations because the movie wuz awesum!!!!1!
