Re: Obama Wins
I've gotta say, on the one hand I'm ecstatic about this. On the other, I'm looking at the numbers for the gay marriage ban in disbelief. Is one of the most liberal states in the country still a bunch of fucking head-up-ass bigots? And why does it look like the gay voter turnout was much less than 100%? If someone were trying to pass a constitutional amendment to steal my rights, I'd sure as fuck be first in line on voting day.

I'm not sure about the gay marriage thing, but thankfully we here had enough sense to slam down amendment 48, with the sperm-and-egg being a human and all. That was retarded.

Re: Obama Wins
It's not so much gay marriage in particular, but the fact that a right was determined to be granted by the state constitution, and people created a ballot initiative to amend the constitution to take away that right. That's bigotry, pure and simple. It's no different from amending a state constitution to no longer recognize marriages of people from different races.
I think couples deserve equal treatment under the law. I wouldn't have a problem with calling something a "civil union" and granting equal benefits and protections for gay partners. But in this case, it was determined that same-sex marriage was legal, and granting a right and taking it away because other people disagree is wrong. There are people who still hate blacks. Do we put something on the ballot to try to take away their voting rights? It's exactly the same principle.
It especially bothers me that $36 million was poured into this proposed ban by churches and Christian groups. Jesus is pretty clear that there's a difference between human law and divine law, and we might not always like human law and it won't always intersect with divine law. But how many starving kids could $36 million feed? How many hours of service never happened because of idiots attending "yes on 8" rallies? Fucking hypocrisy, if you ask me. "I follow Jesus, but only when it serves my interest, or when I can use it as an excuse to be a bigot."
Protect marriage? My fucking ass. Not a word in the New Testament about gay rights. But it does say someone who divorces is a sinner. Funny how you don't see any ballot measures to ban divorce, isn't it?
Besides, a victory will give the religious extremists the idea that they can now dictate anything they want to, to anyone they wish to dictate it to. Just when the "Moral Majority" was on the decline, we get this shit and Sarah Palin at once. Now we're going to have to contend with these fucktards for another generation.

Thank you for the votes.
I know Joe said we were against gay marriage during the debates, but just between you and me? NO ON 8.
Peace out.

Re: Obama Wins
it would be so awesome if obama all of a sudden starts talking gangsta as soon as he's in the white house, and was only acting in order to not alienate white voters.
okay, seriously? the firefox spell-check recognized "gangsta" but NOT firefox?

I've been thinking that same thing Vyn! Just like the Reparations episode of Chappelle show with the Al Roker character.

Re: Obama Wins
Another thing: the pro-8 folks aired commercials and had online ads and mailers claiming Obama supported the measure. He didn't. He said he was against redefining marriage at the federal level, and that it was an issue for the states. He'd already said he was against the measure. In a rare case of bipartisanship, so were Schwarzenegger, Feinstein, Pelosi, and Boxer. They also lied about unrelated cases in Massachusetts not even involving gay marriage. Way to follow that "false witness" commandment, eh?
I have to say the anti-group didn't run a particularly strong fight against the dishonesty. On Sunday, they started airing an ad that was probably their best, describing Japanese internment and other racial injustices in CA history. It was voiced by Samuel L Jackson. They should've run that earlier, and it would've been a landslide in their favor. Because isn't the entire point of voting for everyone to try to guess how Samuel L would run the country?

Re: Obama Wins
And that's exactly it too. Thankfully they already passed our 3.9% increase for 2009 so that means come 2010 they'll start going backwards with them.Rogue II wrote: Good luck getting a raise over the next 4 years with the Democrats in control.
And what makes me even more mad is that almost my whole family voted for Obama as far as I can tell. Whatever. I've only got one vote and I used it the best I could...

But not well enough.
52% to 46%, that's fucking great. Not to mention the severe beating in the electoral college.

Re: Obama Wins
Actually, if Obama keeps his promises, maintains his track record, and can lead the Democrats in Congress, your chances are better than you might think. He supported pay raises in the past, was a supporter of the improved GI Bill, and has spoken quite a bit about increasing military benefits. He's definitely more pro-defense than a lot of Dems have been over the past few decades. (I think maybe he's not from the generation of Democrats that started and perpetuated the Vietnam War, and doesn't feel like he has to make up for sending troops there.)
He is a politician, of course, but I think that any lack of pay raises for the military would be due to the same reason my wife probably won't get a raise for a few years--the economy is in the shitter and governments don't have much money.
