Someone explain this to me....

Last night, I saw Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey was on Fuse. It's a music channel I don't watch often, if you're not familiar with it.

So I'm watching it, and notice something that makes no sense to me. They have little factoids at the bottom of the screen, and one spells out the word "shit." Yet it has to use an asterisk in "fuck," writing it as "f*ck." Strange, but that's how BBC America is, too. And Comedy Central later at night. And probably other channels.

In the film, they don't edit several occurrences of the word "dickweed." But they totally bleep out "fag."

Why?

Yes, I know it's a derogatory, offensive word. But isn't "dickweed"? And is "fag" worse than "shit"? You can say "shit" but not "fag"? Even when "fag" is a punchline of a joke that's pretty funny, but makes absolutely no sense without the punchline?

Why not delete the scene? Or, if "fag" is so bad, replace it with "gay," which is bad but not usually considered obscene?

The whole thing just made no fucking sense.

It's like haggling about the number of times you can say an objectionable word. We had seven "Bitch"es in our last script, and ABC asked us to cut it down to two. Why? You obviously don't have an issue with using the word twice. And in a 8:00/7:00 Central time slot no less.

They also severely edited a delicious slo-mo running shot of Olive Snook because of the side-boob issue. :( You guys missed will miss out when it airs...

The only better boob than side boob is full boob...

What is the secret to the strikethrough?

Never mind...

Hey you should do a spoiler thing where they put that black bar across it and you have to hilight it to read it.

That's sweet even if it does mean you're retarded for taking so long to figure it out.

Edit: Looks like spoilers are automatically on separate lines from text. Ah well. I'm leaving it.

It happens for the same reason that "nigga" is censored during reruns of "Chappelle's Show" on TBS, yet they can say "chink" and "a-rab" uncensored in the same sentence.

Censors suck, yet I believe they are a necessary evil to some extent. There was one show I was working on that they were only allowed to have 4 *beeps* per 1/2hr episode. Any "bad" words about that were just *blanked* so then of course the battle became which words to beep and which ones to blank. Got plenty of other stupid censor stories too, but it's late and I don't want to think about work.

Though I mixed a trailer for "This Film is not yet rated" which had some interesting things about ratings/censorship. Still haven't checked the film out, but I've wanted to.

I actually think TV shows should be censored on most channels until a certain time. A lot of what is on in primetime isn't all-ages friendly, or even most-ages friendly, and it's sad. It's close to impossible to offend me, but common sense should tell you that certain things shouldn't be said or shown or discussed explicitly before, say, 10PM.

Honest to God, the only show in primetime I'd let a 10-year-old watch is Pushing Daisies. There may be other stuff that I don't watch that'd be okay, but stuff like CSI or even The Simpsons (now that they just try to ape Family Guy and forgot what they once were) is over the line. Even American Idol I think is iffy; it's geared toward preteen girls, but they go out of their way to include lots of bleeped profanity for some strange reason. Bleeps don't fool anybody.

We actually had this conversation in class today. The kids were trying to convince us that some movie was acceptable for them because there is a "beeped" version available on the DVD as well.

Their argument was that they didn't swear, they just said stuff like, "holy BEEP". I played dumb and asked what the "BEEP" was replacing. Considering they all knew what the offensive word was, I explained to them the notion of "inference" and laid down the final veto. :beard:

Why in the hell would people watch a bleeped version if they own the DVD?!?

I agree, I just think the way and what they censor is stupid. I think it should be more strictly enforced. Most of my complaints are also more from the having to work on the bleeped stuff. Producers are constantly trying to push the limit and then the show ends up getting kicked back to get done all over again. I don't quite understand why they even push it. Just play it safer and than we only have to do something once. I hate doing things twice. Plus, what's wrong with having wholesome values of some sort. Sure not everyone has the same values, but almost everybody has some values.

It's like saying that women should be against Palin because she is pro-life, thinking that all women are pro-choice. I actually know more women that are pro-life than pro-choice. They still might not be a fan of Palin's but it's not because of her pro-life stance. It's more because they refuse to allow their lesbianism to come out.
