Probably an easy question...

Hopefully this makes sense...but is it a lot of trouble to have a secondary address to a .com website (like a .org)?
For example, if registered by Vyn, could/would vynsane.org bring you to this exact same site, rather than just being a redirect to vynsane.com?
Just curious because Slick can only use .org and .mil sites from his ship and if Vyn and/or someone at the other site could do something like that without it being too much of a hassle then we could all enjoy Slick's company while he isn't in port.

the answer is two-fold:

no it is NOT at all a problem to have different "top-level domains" (TLD's) point to the same site. TLD's are .com, .net, .org, etc... it's just the same as having vynsane.com, baconhelmet.com, and nodiving.com point to this site currently. (they do.)

however...

it is a BIG problem to actually acquire those TLD's. the .mil TLD is exclusively reserved for military applications, much like the .gov TLD is for governments. .org is a bit more lax in its restrictions, but i believe you should be required to prove that you are a non- or not-for-profit organization if you own a .org TLD. the .org version of vynsane.com is available, so i may be able to snag it... i have registered a .org for my uncle's burn prevention organization in the past, so it may not be a huge problem...

Thats cool. Thanks.
I was afraid that .orgs were tough to get. Could the fact that you have a store on the main page prevent you from getting a .org, since that could be considered profit?

Slick wasn't really bitching about it. I just wondered if something like were possible since he seems to have an extremely limited internet reach. This way he'd have something to do instead of working 84 hours a week.
But...I'm not even sure how much he'd actually use it when not in port. Its something he'd need to be asked about first.

i doubt it... like i said, i'm pretty sure the rules for .org are a bit lax. i was looking up info on the .org tld and found this:

Code: Select all

.ORG is the Internet home of nonprofit organizations - and of Web sites that are known for providing trusted, valuable information. In addition, businesses and other establishments protect their online identities by registering the .ORG equivalents of the .com, country code or other domain names. Proceeds from .ORG registry registration fees support efforts to address privacy and security issues and to improve Internet access around the world.
looks like there's not as much of a restriction after all. but .mil is totally out of the question. like i said, it's restricted like .gov domains are. and .edu domains - forgot about that one.

heh. always up for wasting military dollars ;)

probably good to contact him and see if he would have the time. it would be another $8.88/year for the domain name, so i'd want to make sure he would get the chance to utilize it.
