DJ'ing a wedding: Need some input

uh, y'know, the sounds that sound good together... sometimes... and sometimes sounds like the disgusting "squish squish" sound Slicker's mom makes whenever she walks

DJ'ing a wedding: Need some input

Post by anarky »

Just me, seeking some friendly advice again. :)

I DJ'ed my own wedding and reception a few years ago. (It was a small affair, with the reception in the same place as the ceremony. I hate professional DJ's, so I just burned a bunch of CD's with the music we wanted to use and had one of Mrs Anarky's brothers man the stereo.)

Mrs Anarky's sister is getting married on July 7. (Yeah, that's right. The would-be rapper I've called my brother-in-law technically won't be such for a few more weeks, though under common law I guess I could've said that for years.) She's not particularly well organized. She asked me to DJ, which I have no problem with.

For starters, here's the list she sent. I'm just lazily copying it from e-mail, adding only my own comments in red. I know there are a few errors, and her timing seems to be, uh, a little unrealistic.
while people are taking their seats:
Once upon a time, storybook love- Pricess Bride soundtrack [she TOTALLY stole this from our wedding]
How Deep is your love- Bee Gees
I Believe in Love- Don Williams
The Lady, her lover and Lord- T.D. Jakes

Living on a Prayer-Bon Jovi

staying alive-bee gees
step in the name of love-r. kelly
still in love-brian mcknight
summer nights-grease soundtrack
truly, madly, deeply-savage garden

First Dance- Unforgettable-nat king cole and natalie cole [I was able to convince her to scrap this mess for the original by just Nat.]

Cake Cutting-Mission Impossible theme
Linus and Lucy-george winston
sugar sugar-archies
How sweet it is-james taylor [I convinced her--easily enough--that Marvin Gaye's version is infinitely better.]

Last Dance-Time in a bottle-Jim Croce
Thank you-Dido
Thank you for loving me-Bon Jovi
Here's the ones I burned to a disc (she's still old-fashioned that way) for her to go over, and haven't heard back, despite the short time:

Aerosmith: I Don't Want to Miss a Thing
Average White Band: Pick Up the Pieces
Beach Boys: God Only Knows
Boyz II Men: In the Still of the Night
Brian Setzer: Jump Jive & Wail
Commodores: Three Times a Lady
Dean Martin: You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You
Domino: This Business of Love
Elton John: Your Song; Can You Feel the Love Tonight
Elvis vs JXL: A Little Less Conversation
Enrique Iglesias: Hero
Four Tops: Reach Out (I'll Be There)
Frank Sinatra: I've Got You Under My Skin; You Make Me Feel So Young; Come Fly With Me; The Way You Look Tonight
George Michael: Faith
Harry Connick: (I Could Only) Whisper Your Name
Joe Cocker: You Are So Beautiful; Up Where We Belong
Kelly Clarkson: A Moment Like This
Lauryn Hill: Can't Take My Eyes Off of You
Lionel Richie: Lady; All Night Long
Lionel Richie & Diana Ross: Endless Love
Louis Armstrong: What a Wonderful World
Mamas and Papas: Dedicated to the One I Love
Marvin Gaye & Tammi Tarrell: Ain't No Mountain High Enough; Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing
Michael Jackson: The Way You Make Me Feel
Sam Cooke: You Send Me; (What a) Wonderful World; Twistin' the Night Away
Soup Dragons: Divine Thing
Stevie Wonder: I Just Called to Say I Love You; My Cherie Amour; I Was Made to Love Her
Temptations: My Girl; The Way You Do the Things You Do; Get Ready
Temptations & Supremes: I'm Gonna Make You Love Me
Tom Jones: It's Not Unusual
Tom Jones & Art of Noise: Kiss
Turtles: Happy Together
U2: Wild Honey [she's into monkeys]

Sooooooooo....

I'm not sure where the list of stuff I used for my own wedding is, and, in any case, I had several months to plan. Here, I'm a little more pressed for time. I'm sure I'll come up with more, but I'd appreciate any other "must have" songs.

She's Asian, but is one of those people who thinks she's black, and mostly into new (read: pussy) R&B and 80s music. He's black, mostly into hip-hop, but far more open minded. (I half expect Dean and Frankie to get the nix from her despite his thoughts. But, dude, those two and Joe Cocker belong at every wedding reception, right?)

Oh, yeah: "At Last" by Etta James is totally out. She didn't bring it up, and my wife will kill me if I suggest it.

To quote one of the worst characters in recent memory, any hep here'd be hot.

I would swap BoyzIImen for the Five Satins version of in the still of the night. Possibly add Slow Hands Wonderful tonight.

Agreed, toss in some STP - Still remains, add a double shot of Zep(anything) and its good to go.

Wow, I've never even though of Still Remains as a possible dance/wedding song. Its almost crazy enough to work.
STP also has a good song called Wonderful from the Shangri-La Dee Da album.

My wife and I had Come Away With Me (Norah Jones) for our first dance song. It was one of the only things I insisted on. If I had let her have her way it'd have been some retarded ass hillbilly country song.

You could slip some novelty songs in like The Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, and whatever else people dance to at weddings.

How about some of those cheesy songs from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack? Those are 80s music.

My wife picked some Sarah McLachlan for our reception. That might have been the song that played when she danced with her father.

I managed to slip some Led Zeppelin in during our ceremony. During the part where we lit the candles, White Summer/Black Mountain Side played.

Love Rollercoaster is a possibility, but probably the original.

I was told "no hard rock--I hate that stuff," so KISS, STP, and Zep are likely out. :(

Not sure what she considers "Livin' on a Prayer," though. That's back when Jon and company actually were sorta hard rock.

"One" by U2 was the consummate 90s first dance track - we must have attended 10 weddings that used it. Not a bad choice now that a few years have passed.
