The Twin Towers
Without them the NYC skyline looks kinda...generic. Sure, you still got your tapered Empire State Building thing going on, but them WTC puppies really stood out and made it look cool.
I miss them. Here's to you, fellas (raises glass)...
I am reminded of a guy they interviewed right after it happened, a man on the street kinda thing. He had this nice thick Noo Yawk accent and he was like 'Don't build a memorial or turn it into a garden or anything like that. Put them back up exactly like they were. That'll send a stronger message to whoever did this than any memorial could. As New Yorkers we need that...'
Two years later and I still think he's right.

Re: The Twin Towers
so, finally cooler head have prevailed and the name 'freedom tower' has given way to 'one world trade center'.

i can only now hope that this is the beginning of the full scrapping of the proposed design that will eventually lead us back to rebuilding the twin towers aesthetically identical to the originals (with internal structural updates, of course.)

Re: The Twin Towers
I'm not sure about any new building of any design and kinda lean towards the site being a memorial garden of tranquility and reflection. A place to remember, to ponder the complexities of human life and human nature.
I guess to some people it only represents a prime piece of real estate. sad.

Re: The Twin Towers
well, the unfortunate reality of it is that the destruction of the original WTC left a gaping wound that gushes money out of the city like nobody's business. NYC was feeling effects of an economic downturn LONG before anyone else in this nation, or the world at large, and it was in no small part due to the loss of revenue as businesses fled the city. the city literally NEEDS this area rebuilt to reclaim some of the business it has been missing for 8 someodd years now.
the current plan leaves a lot of open area for memorial, including large reflecting pools at the original footprint of the twin towers. this is more than adequate remembrance. the fact that the project has taken this long to even start construction is, however, NOT adequate remembrance. frankly it's a travesty that it's gone on this long and i'm sure were they alive today, the victims of that attack would be outraged. NYC is very much the 'get back to business' type of city, and for the WTC to not be back to business yet goes against the very core of the city's being.

Re: The Twin Towers
I agree, they could have built the buildings twice already. think what it will do for the current economy. Jobs to build, trucking, supplies, food for workers etc.

Re: The Twin Towers
I've always thought rebuilding the towers was a no-brainer.
Also, it would be the biggest "fuck you" we could send to those that destroyed them.

Re: The Twin Towers
fair enough. I hadn't realised how bad it was in terms of econimic downturn. that puts a different light on things.
is it that delays are due to engineering and architectural considrations, as in trying to come up with buildings immune to the type of attack the twin towers suffered? or is it simply economics and the funding just isn't forthcoming?

Re: The Twin Towers
i'm really not certain what the delay is due to. i don't necessarily think it's solely an economic issue. the city struggled due to the lack of revenue, but the owners of the property didn't, really. frankly i'm at a loss as to why there isn't already another WTC.Jargo wrote:is it that delays are due to engineering and architectural considrations, as in trying to come up with buildings immune to the type of attack the twin towers suffered? or is it simply economics and the funding just isn't forthcoming?

Re: The Twin Towers
It is rather ridiculous that it's taking this long to put up a new building. If I'm not mistaken it took less than a year to build the Empire State Building. Why is this one going one almost 8 years?

Re: The Twin Towers
at this point the WTC construction should be item #1 on obama's DPW list. i think it will require so much construction work that it would make a great first round and really help the economy.

For a bit of an idea as to what the hold-up is, check out Penn and Tellers BULLSHIT, a couple years ago they did an episode about it which might shed a bunch of light on the issues (and so ya know, the episode is in no wise related to any sort of conspiracy and is also NOT disrespectful in any way)
