Due to the blizzard I didn't get my books until Thursday. it was a light week with only 12 books.

Amazing Spidey 653. Spidey saves Joh Jameson, but Aunt May is still a target, so Pete calls in his Avenger buddies. And Pete's new boss figures out his secret. But the guy is like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs rolled into one, so thats no surprise.

Blockbusters of the Marvel U. oneshot. A Handbook style issue that looks at Marvel Events. Stuff like Atlanstic Attacks and Inferno to more recent crossovers like Civil War, Secret Invastion and Seige are all summed up. But was really interesting was the Appendix of Events they DIDN'T cover. The book has like 40 events in it. The Index (with promises of future issues dealing with them) had 230 more. Yikes.

Brightest Day 19. Aquaman and Aquaboy deal with the surface invasion of evil Atlateans.

Deadpool/Cable 26. Sort of a oneshot that tongue in cheekly continued Cable's numbering from his last series. The issue deals with Wade's reaction and "honoring" his former partner's death.

GiJOE 26. Snake Eyes and Helix decimate the secret hidden acrtic M.A.S.S. base and Cobra Commander decides to not risk it and just blows the whole thing up. Obviously this issue takes place before CC got a bullet in his skull.

Gotham City Sirens 19. The final White cover from DC. Catwoman wrestles with deciding whether or not to have Zatanna erase her memory of Batman's secret identity. And Harley decides she's gonna kill Mr. J.

Invincible Iron Man 500.1 part of Marvel's "Point One" campaign of easy to jump in issues. This one deals with Iron Man's entire history in the context of his alcoholism, neatly wrapped up in a narrative by Tony at an AA meeting. Pretty well done.

Jonah Hex 64. Jonah gets a hot stalker chick who tries to kill him, then fuck him, then kill him, then fuck him. Eventually he fuckes her, and the town kills her. Because she's fucking crazy.

Marvel Index 10. Thor, Cap and Avengers books hit the 90's! Remember when all the Avengers were wearing leather flight jackets? Ahh good times.

Secret Six 30. Bane goes on a first date with a stripper. Then the team fights the Doom Patrol. Everybody has good lines. Especially Deadshot.

The Stand:No Man's Land 1. The first issue of the penultimate series begins. As the previous issues were awesome, so this one is as well.

Transformers Infestation 1. Eh. Zombies vs Transformers. Kup gets impaled. Is this in continuity? I did like how Galvatron and the Decepticons were trying to get the Autobots and Humans on board against the real threat, and Prime was being the dense one this time. Steroetypes die hard.

I also swung by Taco Bell and got the four 11 page comics that come with kids meals. They were decent. They actually had some name talent on them like Tom Grummett on the X-Men book, and Paul Tobin on FF. I'm pretty sure they were set either in the Marvel Adventure's continuity, or in their own continuity all by itself. The Iron Man one was the best, for obvious reasons described in the Atomic Robo topic.

A big week with lots of good reads.

Amazing Spidey 654. The Conclusion of the SpiderSlayer story with a jaw dropping death scene conclusion. And Flash Thompson becomes the new Venom. Yeah, you read that right.

Atomic Robo:Deadly Art of Science 3. Ahhh, Robo. Words are insufficient to proclaim how awesome you are.

New Avengers 9. Howard Chaykin splits art duties with Mike Deodato as we get two storylines, one set in the 1950s and the other with the current team. Apparently the "Avengers Initiative" is gonna be a thing in the comics now that was started by the President back in 1959. Oh, and in the current story Mockingbird takes a bullet center mass.

Batgirl 18. Steph teams up with Klarion the Witchboy when his 'familiar', a cat, gets the URGE. Then he turns into a giant were-cat and they have to stop him from eating people. The whole thing has a Valentine's Day undertone to it.

Batman & Robin 20. Peter Tomasi begins his run on the book with a bang. Comissioner Gordon putting the brat Damian in his place was priceless.

Birds of Prey 9. Death of Oracle continues. Who are they kidding? We know she's not really gonna die.

Carnage 3. The all new female Carnage heads towards the headquarters of the douche that's been using the symbiote as a cash cow. Or so we think. Turns out she (IT) is just trying to reunite with....Cletus. Who survived in space for a year. But the symbiote had to eat his legs to survive.

Deadpool Team-Up 885. DP team up with Hellcow. Who was in an issue of Howard the Duck. The absurdity of the teamup is surpassed by the latter half of the issue, when after Bessie is disintegrated by sunlight, DP rips backwards through the pages of the comic to prevent that from happening.

Flash 9. Haven't read it. But its on the road to Flashpoint.

GIJoe ARAH 163. Baroness trapped in the Pit! Destro and Zartan plan a rescue. Stormshadow goes to rescue Snake-Eyes with the blessing of Scarlett and Spirit Iron Knife. Everybody has a vocabulary sorely lacking in mainstream comics.

Green Lantern Emerald Warriors 7. Guy fights Sodam Yat in a prelude to Green Lantern War.

Heroes for Hire 3. Moon Knight stops white slave trade and fights dinosaurs from the Savage Land. And Paladin closes in on the truth behind Misty Knight.

Legacies 9. Green lantern becomes parallax and then finds redemption by saving everyone during Final Night, and finally becomes the new Spectre. Honestly, Hal Jordan was not really gone for any length of time in the DC Universe.

Red Robin 20. Tim gets his ass beat by Catman (awesome!) and calls his former teammates the Titans in for help. The titans now include Damian Wayne.

Secret Warriors 24. In the course of a single issue we are introduced to one of Nick Fury's other teams led by his son Mikel. We see the entire team recruited, in single page snippets. And we see their end as they sacrifice themselves to further Nick's goals. Its a done in one tragedy as we count down to the end of the series. I imagine if they had sparsed this out a little more, this would have been a two or even three issue arc, but its compression makes it hit all the harder.

Superman 708. Superman meets a billion Superpeople from the future in the Fortress of Solidarity.

WidowMaker 4. A promising mini series limps to the finish line.

Wolverine 5.1 havent read it.
Wolverine 1000. havent read it.

X-Factor 215. Madrox proposes to Layla Miller. And they fight an African soul vampire creature.

Punisher Max #10 - Back after a 6 month hiatus (or so). Frank is in deep shit. His safehouses are all gone and he's being hunted by the NYPD after shooting 3 cops (including killing a dirty cop). Bullseye finally gets inside Frank's head and understands him just as Frank storms Fisk's headquarters.

Incognito: Bad Influences #2 - Zack goes further underground and realizes deep down he misses being a bad guy.

Batman & Robin #20 - Far better than the last arc. Good set up to a new story. And although it doesn't tie-in to the main story, I liked the first few pages, with Bruce, Tim, Dick, Damien and Alfred enjoying movie night at Wayne Manor.

Upon discovering I'd missed PunisherMAX last week, I did a quick inventory check and discoverd over the last couple weeks I've missed other books as well, such as Gen Lost and Wolverine among others. WTF. Does alzheimer's hit at 37?

Anyway, here's this weeks books.

Amazing Spidey 654.1 One of Marvel's infamous "point one" books. More of a Venom issue 0, than an actual Spidey book. Flash Thompson goes on his first missions as the new Venom. Suprisingly what wasn't shown was Marlena Jameson's funeral, although it was a plot point of the issue. First mattie Franklin and now his wife. Do we ever get to see Jonah grieve? The final 2 page spread at the end hinted at oodles of fun upcoming storylines though. Mr. Negative lording over a seemingly dead Anti-Venom. MJ with Spider powers stuck to the side of a building! Norah sucking face with Hobgoblin(wha?!). Peter discovering who the mysterious seventh thinktank member at Horizon is. Spidey and friends in outer space. And the return of the Sinister Six. Looks like a busy year.

Avengers Academy 9. Tigra rethinks her expusion of the students after talking to Speedball and Quicksilver among others. Finesse fights with taskmaster to find out if he's her father, but no conclusion is drawn.

Batman 707. Batman and some other people fight some other guy for an ancient powerful mask.

Booster Gold 41. Booster and Rip defend their lair from a time travelling German Officer from the 40s. And then Booster decides to accept his punishment for stealing his superhero costume all those years ago. His punishment is five years in the slammer.

Brightest Day 20. Aquaman gets his hand chopped off! Again! Black Manta tries to kill a bunch of people on a beach, and Mera, Aquaman, Aquagirl, and Aquaboy stop him and the invading Atlantean hordes. Then the White Lantern shows up at the end and kills Aquaman just like it did with Hawkman and Woman last issue.

Daredevil Reborn 2. Murdock continues to try and avoid conflict in the lazy redneck podunk town he was travelling through. But the ne'erdo wells in town see him as a threat and keep trying to kill him.

Formic Wars 1. The never told before story of the first two invasions leading to Ender's Game starts here.

GIJoe Cobra 13. Chuckles' story comes to its conclusion. Wow. Excellent series.

Green Lantern 62. Hal and the other ringslingers fight a Krona powered by all the ring entities.

Green Lantern Corps 57. Kyle, John , and the other GLs help the Weaponer and the Qwardians fight the Sinestro Corps. Firestorm stops by and helps. In the end the Weaponer switches sides and accepts a Sinestro Ring. Soranik Natu really REALLY hates her dad.

Hawkeye: Blindspot 1. After suffering a blow to the head at the end of the Widowmaker miniseries, Hawkeye finds out he has concussion slowly robbing him of his sight. Which is a sucky thing to have happen to you when you're an expert marksman. Color me intrigued.

Justice League America 54. Aside from seeing Brett Booth art again, I once again am dissappointed with this book. Robinson sucks balls as a writer. When will I learn. Oh, and the JLA don't even appear in the book. Except for the opening splash pages, not a Leaguer in sight. This book is running out of asses to suck. There's only about 6 billion on the planet and this series is rapidly sucking every one of them as fast as it can.

SHIELD 6. Uhmmm...DaVinci and Newton gather opposing armoes to fight in a secret dimension city that is the HQ of SHIELD. And Agents Stark and Richards are 500,000 years in the future saving the life of cyborg Tesla. Then a glowing Michelangelo shows up on the final page of the series...

Silver Surfer 1. Surfer gets yet another shot at a series.

Thunderbolts 153. Probably the best issue since the new direction (that is not saying much). Ghost gives Moonstone and Songbird mouth to mouth. Juggernaut holds his own and then some against evil Hyperion. And since Hyperion is basically one of Marvel's several ersatz Supermen (Hi there, Gladiator and Sentry) this book is saying Juggernaut can beat Superman. heh. Also, the thing with Man-Thing at the end was sweet.

Transformers Infestation 2. Kup sacrifices himself to save the world. From zombies.

Wolverine 6. I just realized I haven't read (or purchased) issue 5, but this issue is about Cyclops having protocols in place to take down Wolverine when he inevitably goes berserk again. Cyclops is awesome.

Wolverine and Jubilee 2. Jubilee is still a vampire. But she threw Logan's motorcycle in a deep ravine and made him walk back to the hotel. So that was funny.

Wonder Woman 607. Wonder Woman beats up a Minotaur.

Uncanny X-Force 5. Ermm...okay since when does Deadpool have of snooty sense of moral superiority? Oh wait, he does when Remender writes him. *raspberry* Even the Fantomex stuff couldn't make this issue a winner. And I hate that Deathlok has become a "concept" rather than a character in the Marvel Universe. What? Need a killer robot army for your story? Just make them all Deathloks! It in no way dilutes the original. OR the Michael Collins version! Or the new Marvel Knights version. Or the one that appeared in Jason Aaron's recent Wolverine story. Nope. Just keep pumping out random Deathlok's so that the character and concept will be boring and useless as hell.

Punisher: In The Blood #4 - Best issue of the series so far. Some nice twists and Remender totally redeemed himself with a certain revelation.

Gotham City Sirens #20 - Harley breaks into Arkham because she has decided its time for Joker to die.

Star Wars Legacy: War #3 - More shit happens in the rush job mini to wrap up the story after the ongoing's sudden cancellation.

Morning Glories #7 - A new story arc. I gave in a read issues 2-6 last week. Good stuff, but not totally sure how it all started. I see the 1st trade is only $10, so I may pick that up.

25 books this week. Lets get started.

Amazing Spidey 655. This week's book left me in a severely reflective mood. Both this issue, as well as the issue of Fantastic Four, combined with the real life loss of Dwayne McDuffie had me pondering the idea of death in comics. This issue focused on the funeral of J. Jonah Jameson's wife Marla. It was very well written, told only with images for the first half, and reinforcing Pete's guilt on being unable to save those closest to him in the second. Although it's a tale thats been told before, I feel it needs to be reinforced from time to time, given the long five decade history of the character. But having TWO separate comics deal with the fallout of characters’ deaths in the same week, just a day after losing someone like McDuffie, well...it makes you think about how serious writers take ending the lives of fictional characters, and the complete lack of gravitas it evokes in todays readers. One would hope people actually working in the medium would come to the same realizations, but I sincerely doubt it.

Avengers 10. Cap and Iron Man are still pissed at each other, and Iron Man goes on a big rant about making hard decisions and not being sorry for them, which then is totally rendered moot by the Hood stealing more Infinity Gems and making his said “decision” look like a stupid one.

Secret Avengers 10. The secret avengers fight the Secret Society and kill FU MANCHU, the father of Shang-Chi. And although the bad guys escape, they capture the once heroic John Steele.

Detective Comics 874. Commisioner Gordon has a sit down talk with his very creepy sociopath son in a coffee shop. Does anyone know when and where James Jr. became a nutty? I’d like to find those issues and read them
.
Captain America 615. Bucky Cap breaks out of jail (explicitly against the judges orders) to go fight RedSkull 2. She blows up the Statue of Liberty’s face. The judge then gives BuckyCap 20 years, and then propmpty commutes the sentence as time served. Awwww….how convenient.

Deadpool Team-Up 884. DP teams up with Uatu. Hilarity ensues.

Speaker For The Dead 2. The sequel to Ender’s Game continues in this adaptation. Again, they leave a lot of stuff out of these comics. Read the book.

Fantastic Four 588. The other “funeral” issue, as we get a mostly silent issue of the first thirty days after Johnny Storm’s demise. And a worthy back-up story where Spidey spends some time with Franklin, and discusses how he also lost an Uncle and how it has affected him. Well done. Although emblazoning FINAL ISSUE across the top of the book, when all speculation points to it being back in a year is kinda under whelming. Its not even the first (or second) “Final Issue” for this series.

GIJoe 27. Another Final issue. Snake-Eyes and Helix manage to survive the MASS Device base being swallowed by the Arctic Ocean, and Cobra Commander goes on a fateful trip at the end. The new series begin next month.

Gotham City Sirens 20. Harley breaks into Arkham to kill the Jo…oh, Diabolical already took care of that.

Iron Man 501. Iron Man earns the wrath of a new nemesis as Doctor Octopus threatens to blow up NYC. Through clever retcons and flashbacks, we learn there’s been animosity between these two for decades. And it’s a natural fit. Another good issue from Fraction.

Iron Man 2.0 1. This is a War Machine series with a more franchisable name. And its was fairly decent with some good dialogue by Nick Spencer.

Iron Man/Thor 4. Iron Man and Thor defeat Diablo. Half the issue was a n “origin” tale of how Diablo came to be, leaving little time for the two heroes to inevitably defeat him. All in all, a series that started strong and puttered to a finale.

Justice League: Gen Lost 20. Blue Beetle gets shot in the head…again. Yup, DC Comics continues its culling of minority characters. Can’t be having beaners like Jaime Reyes running around as role models for minorities to look up to, Not when there are perfectly decent whitey mcwhite bread guys like Superman, Batman, Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, Aquaman, etc etc.

Namor 7. following closely on the heels of the Wolverine goes to Hell storyline, this arc feels cheap. And since the first two arcs of this book have failed to impress me, I think I’m dropping it. Despite my affection for Namor having his own book.

Osborn 2. This was in the dollar bin (and the reason I have 25 books this week). Norman breaks out of prison with the help of some other inmates and a priest whos in his new Goblin Tatoo cult.

Punisher:In The Blood 4. This book has become a joke and I’ll be glad when it ends. From the anti-climactic end of a semi major nemesis (why did they even bring him back?) to the constant yammering of the two Jigsaws taking up way too many pages of the issue, I can already see where this book is going. Pee. Yew.

PunisherMAX 10. Much better than the other crap, but after a delay of several months, I couldn’t muster the excitement I had from before. And Steve Dillon’s art is boring.

Action Comics 898. Lex Luthor vs. Larfleeze. it’s an Orange Lantern rematch!!

Teen Titans 92. Red Robin and Robin sort out fraternal issues as they and the rest of the Titans fight evil Calculator robot clones.

Thor 620. Odin brings the pain y’all.

X-23 6. Laura sorts out the Miss Sinister/Mr. Sinister business. Another book I’m debating dropping.

Uncanny X-Men 533. The Sublime corporation pitches its “Mutantism as a status symbol” to investors, in a surreal commentary on 21st century corporate mentality. Not bad.

X-Men Legacy 245/New Mutants 22. Lumped these together as they are the first and second chapters of the “Age of X” alternate reality crossover. Impressive tale by Mike Carey where the mutants of a tangent world fight from the confines of their last safe area “Fortress X”. But a few of the survivors, such as Basilisk (you know him better as Cyclops) and Legacy (you know her better as Rogue) are finding folds in the wizard’s curtain.

You didn't like either?
I thought this was easily the best issue of Punisher: In The Blood. Yeah there was too much yapping between the Jigsaws, but the apparent death of Jigsaw 2 and Micro helped to thin the herd a bit (although I'm think Frank slit the steak rather that Micro's throat for some reason). Plus the revelation that the chick wasn't Maria was a huge relief. I'm really hoping the next issue cleans house with everyone else and the new creative team has a blank slate to work with.

As for MAX, yeah the huge wait was a momentum killer, but I still thought it was pretty good. And I also hate Dillon's artwork...for MAX anyway. It makes the stories feel like the old Marvel Knights turned up a notch. His art just doesn't fit the MAX realism.

I bought a small handful of comics from a store on Comiccollectorlive. 6 old comics for less than $1.25 each (including shipping).
Batman Annual 15 - Armageddon 2001. I had this when it first came out, and I remember liking back then. Hopefully it wasn't just nostalgia.
Blood and Glory - Punisher & Cap mini-series from back in the day.
Ghost Rider/Wolverine/Punisher: Hearts of Darkness - Cappy had this way back when. Again, nostalgia.
Punisher: G-Force - Old one-shot.
What If...? 10 - The Punisher's Family Hadn't Been Killed?
Wolverine: The Jungle Adventure Wolverine fight Apocalypse in the jungle (Savage Land?)

Yeah, but it was too little too late for me. And retroactively making Frank not be able to tell the difference between his wife and some skank, just disservices the character overall. It makes him look like a schmuck. I forsee everything being set back to status quo in time for the relaunch this summer. No Micor. No Jigsaw Jr. Just Frank. Frank needs some new archenemies. The fact that Jigsaw is still alive after all this time is a joke.

I've slowly disliked Dillon's art as time goes on. Everybody looks wooden and in a drug filled stupor, except they're all standing rigid.

The Jungle Adventure is the one with Wolverine's Son, that they've kinda forgotten about continuity wise. But I haven't. No sir.

My Punisher list is slowly getting whittled down. I got Punisher Invades the 'Nam GN a few weeks ago. It collects the final issue of The 'Nam series as well as the two issues after that that never saw print. And a Hardcover of Intruder I got for $1.99. I also found the Family Plot Spidey crossover, both issues for a buck.
Which leaves 2 issues of the '95 series, 3 issues of the FrankenCastle crap(I've been finding 50 cent issues here and there, just to have the run), one issue of the Ennis/Dillon WarZone mini from a few years ago, Holiday Special 3, Summer Special 1 thru 4, Year One 2 thru 4, most of the vs Bullseye series, Assassin's Guild, KingdomGone, Empty Quarter, and the very hard to find/fuckingexpensive Versus Daredevil oneshot from 2000 with a the kickass cover. It's reprints so I'm not that focused on it.
I think there's also some mini series that have his name second like Wolverine vs, Daredevil vs, etc. But overall, I'm getting very close.

The Jungle Adventure was a great Wolvie story. I'd rather see that son than this Daken bullshit.

I always wanted to see The 'Nam do a Snake Eyes story or two, since they had a couple of Punisher stories (and, according to what you wrote, at least one more that went unpublished). We know that, by the time he joined the LRRP with Storm Shadow and Stalker, he'd already had a run-in with Destro and unwittingly set the Baroness on a career in terrorism. Something Stalker mentioned at one point pointed toward him having a lot more checkered adventures, and doing them in The 'Nam would've been a cool way to tell those stories without worrying about Hasbro license requirements.

The problem with Punisher as a superhero is that he simply cannot have too many recurring villains, given that he never intentionally leaves any survivor. I remember Saracen being the only one (aside from the omnipresent Jigsaw) to get a Marvel trading card back in the day. Looks like he finally bought it in 1994, and the poor guy doesn't even have enough of a following to warrant his own Wikipedia page. Fucking Boom Boom has her own page.

Oh, and back to the subject: GIJoe: A Real American Hero, Volume 1 (155.5-160) came in the mail today. I would like to take this opportunity to make a statement not to the regulars here, but to the critics and Joe fanboys who have complained that it is weak and has too much of a "throwback" feel:
Fuck you.

You are so goddamned retarded, you have to hire a crack whore to wipe your ass when you shit, or the smell knocks out everyone within a mile of you.

Go suck a dick and enjoy your decompressed, talking heads bullshit.

He will be in my next "EiC" post.
Which is why Jigsaw repeatedly being a thorn in his side is all the more ridiculous.

Impressive. I don't think there's any way I'll ever get all the old Punisher comics. There are just far too many.
I've always liked The Punisher, but I didn't seriously read until circa 2000, with Marvel Knights. And even then I've skipped most of the stuff that wasn't by Ennis...until he left, then I continued with the series' I was already buying.
The closest I'll get to the old school stuff is probably the Essential books (which reminds me, I still need book 3).

There's always Kingpin and Bullseye, even though are borrowed villains from DD and Spidey.

I kind of like the fact that Punisher doesn't have a rogues gallery - if he did it would mean he isn't doing his job.
Ennis had a rule that if one of Frank's opponents survives round 1, they won't survive round 2 (See: The Russian, Nicky Cavella and Barracuda).

Got my purchase from comiccollectorlive today.
That was really damn quick.
Everything arrived in great shape and packed incredibly well.
Haven't read anything yet.

They even threw a couple of random extra comics in, nothing special; original Punisher #75 (which I have somewhere), Incredible Hulk #393 (30th Anniversary issue) and Wild Thing #3. I think maybe they were just in there as filler between books.
