It shouldn't be applied to Starship Troopers or Fifth Element. Those were actually good.

I hate to go way back, but I would suggest they were even starting that or "the next star wars" when Last Starfighter came out.

That'd be hard to bill as "this generations Star Wars" when it was still in same generation AS Star Wars. But I see your point.

2 Guns. The antithesis of a buddy cop movie. An undercover DEA agent and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer both get framed for stealing $43 Million in CIA slush money and reluctantly have to team up to survive against dirty Military, dirty CIA assholes, and a dirty mexican drug lord. Lots of lively banter, and excellent shoot outs. And Paula Patton's glorious nekked titties. And believe you me, they are a fantastic pair of titties.

I'm thinking there should have been a "Paula Patton's 2 Guns" joke somewhere in there. Anyway, I had no interest whatsoever in this movie until that sentence.

Over the weekend I watched The Blues Brothers because we had free Cinemax and it was on. I started looking up the blues musicians that made cameos. From what I can tell, Aretha Franklin is the only one that is still alive. I knew Frank Oz and Pee Wee Hermen had small parts in the movie, but after seeing it many times, I just realized Stephen Spielberg was the clerk in the Cook County Assessor's office and Joe Walsh was one of the prisoners.

I also caught part of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom on some other station. It might have been Spike.

I'm going to assume we're not counting the Blues Brothers themselves; I think all but Joliet Jake "Jim Belushi" Blues and Donald "Duck" Dunn are alive.

Cab Calloway: Dead
James Brown: Dead
Ray Charles: Dead
John Lee Hooker: Dead
Pinetop Perkins: Dead

I think you're onto something....

However, I'm seeing Luther Johnson (alive), Willie Smith (dead), Calvin Jones (dead), and Walter Horton (dead) listed as members of a street band; I guess the one playing with JLH outside Ray's Guitar Shop. They're all clearly blues musicians, but none of those names are ringing a bell.

So, two, if we count Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson.

Took the kids to see Despicable Me 2 today. I'd say 90% of the laughs (from me at least) came from Minion related antics. The dual plots of Gru trying to uncover a new Villain's plot while simultaneously dealing with the "romance" subplot just seemed tacked together and not engaging. A very run of the mill story. I did chuckle at one of the three girls(I forget their names) having a recurring gag of playing with different weapons throughout the film. For instance, I laughed at her playing ping pong with a minion with a nunchuk. But mostly it was the Minion show. I heard they're getting their own movie next year.

Also found The Name of the Rose DVD for $3 at a consignment store. Not as great as I remember, but still a solid flick with good performances by Connery, F. Murray Abraham, and plenty of great character actors. First thing I ever saw Ron Perlman in. And I think this movie and Revenge of the Nerds were tied for the first movies I saw tits and bush in. That sticks with you.

World War Z = pants.
Star Trek into Darkness = pants
Iron man 3 = weak
R.I.P.D. = ok-ish
Upside Down = decent
Frankenstein's Army = dire

Shitloads of other stuff so crappy I don't even remember what they were.

The Postman. Hadn't watched it in awhile. It's set in the year 2013. :)

Source Code. Jake Gylenhall has 8 minutes to figure out who blew up a commuter train in Chicago. And he keeps living the same 8 minutes over Groundhog's Day style to catch the bomber. Pretty cool Sci-Fi film from the guy who directed Moon.

Prisoners. Hugh Jackman's and Terence Howard's kids get kidnapped and they go all Jack Bauer on Paul Dano to find out who took them. A pretty intense thriller. The abrupt ending had the entire audience saying 'WTF?' but I liked it.

Murder by Death. This murder mystery spoof/satire was on TV this weekend. Have you seen this movie?! You couldn't make up a more awesome cast.

James Coco plays a spoof of Hercule Poirot.
A young James Cromwell plays his assistant.
David Niven and Maggie Smith play spoofs of Nick and Nora Charles(The Thin Man movies)
Peter Falk plays a Sam Spade spoof with Eileen Brennan as his moll.
Peter Sellers is a full on, politically incorrect Charlie Chan spoof.
The Miss Marple spoof is played by Elsa Manchester.
In addition, Nancy Walker plays the mute maid, and Alec fuckin' Guiness plays the blind butler!
Both of whom work for eccentric millionaire Truman Capote. Yes!

Truman Capote's character invites the world's five greatest detectives (and their assistants) to his mansion and challenges them to solve a murder before midnight. Hilarity ensues thanks to Neil Simon's writing and direction.

And Fun Fact: Alec Guiness was sent the Star Wars script to read in his dressing room between scenes.

Gravity. WOW. Go see it in 3D. Preferably on IMAX. Impressive filmmaking.

I was going to go today, but I was too lazy. Tomorrow for sure.

I did see The Dirties last night. Powerful indie flick about bullying/school shootings. Kevin Smith called it the best film he's seen in the last 5 years. I wouldn't go that far, but it was really good. Smith loves it so much he's helping to distribute the flick.

Saw Gravity. Loved it. One of the year's best flicks.
