Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Fucking. Amazing.
I love the nods to the original--the lost flight to Mars, "Bright Eyes," the hunt scene at the beginning. I especially love that, though it invalidates some of the sequels, they kept the historical moment where Caesar first says "No."
I do not say this lightly, but I'd love to see a remake of the original that is of the same quality and is more visually consistent with this movie.

There are ton of nods to the original there.
At one point Caesar is playing with a Statue of Liberty toy to many of the character names. There are more they point out in the special features.
Like X-Men: First Class, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of my favorites of last year and one of the biggest surprises. Neither flick had any right to be any good.

The best part about the Statue of Liberty part is that Caesar is playing with a construction toy, and the only part missing is the statue's face.Diabolical wrote:There are ton of nods to the original there.

I actually haven't seen an entire POTA film aside from this one, but I still got many of the references and loved it for what it was. It's really damn good.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Ugh. Dammit. I bought The Perfect Getaway with Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, Tim Olyphant, and Kiele Sanchez out of the $5 bin at WM. I'm only 19 minutes in and I already figured out the twist.

I went to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy today. It was much less exciting than the trailer made it. It was very dry, slow paced, and British. With lots of talking and looks, exchanges, and glances. It was well acted though. It wouldn't kill you to check it out eventually, but it doesn't need to be seen in theatres.

My Blueberry Nights - First time I've watched it since the first time when I bought it.
Its a good flick, but not amazing. The plot is pretty thin and the whole thing feels like an Indie Flick - Lots of artsy shots, like the kinda slo-mo, but not really shot.
This is clearly Norah Jones' first role, but she is rather good. There are only a few moments of "acting."
Jude Law is almost always good.
But Natalie Portman is the highlight for me. A smaller role, but one of her better ones.
Portman and Jones onscreen together and sharing a bed?
I'll be in my bunk.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man. Considering it was made in 1951, the special effects were somewhat impressive. Some pretty good one liners, too.

I watched Speed 12. Wait. Was it Speed? It had the exact same plot as Speed. Right down to the cop's buddy getting blown up in a trap set by the villain. Oh wait, no. It was 12 Rounds.. Which was still better than all the Speed movies except the first one.

Moneyball - It was a great book, but I have no idea how anyone read the book and thought it was movie material, especially a movie about the business of baseball that shows very little of the game, but they pulled it off. Good flick.

Re: What have you watched lately?
After reading a recap of it on the Agony Booth, I happened upon Eragon and watched it- if you want a horrible fantasy movie that is so stupid and derivative (there was plenty of dialogue and several shots lifted from the OT) it almost hurts, that is your film

Black Swan. Well, sorta. I only paid attention to the good parts. Sure, there was no nudity, but HOLY SHIT MILA KUNIS MAKING OUT WITH NATALIE PORTMAN AND THEN DOING A PRETTY DAMNED GOOD JOB PRETENDING TO EAT HER OUT.
Fuck, every time I think of that, I'll need to change pants.

Go see it, Rollo.jjreason wrote:Tintin. The best Indiana Jones movie since, well, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Amazing use of the 3D - finally, a movie that incorporates the technique in a way that helps with the immersion as opposed to distracting you out of it. This year's Speed Racer for me.
Your first words when coming out of the theater will be "Fuck you, Academy of Performing Fucktards!" The only nod it got was for the score. The fucking score. Now, it's an awesome score, because it's John Williams, but it's too derivative of a few of his earlier scores (especially Indy and Harry Potter) for me to think it's one of the best. (The best I know of would be Cars 2, not even nominated.) It didn't even get a fucking Best Animated Picture nomination.
Of course, though they recognized a new Muppet movie should have a "Best Original Song" somewhere in it, they apparently thought it was "Man or Muppet," further proving their lauckycal retardedness.

Re: What have you watched lately?
I went to TinTin last Thursday. I am indeed flummoxed as to why it's not in the Best Animated Category. Having not seen 4 of the Animated Films on the list, I'm thinking one of the two foreign choices will win it.
I went to The Artist this afternoon. An ambitious film with a very pedestrian plot. It's basically the same plot as Singin' In The Rain, but with no talking and less Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor being awesome. The main lead did a fine job. I think the fact a silent black and white film got made in 2011 is more amazing than the film itself, but I'm sure the Academy will love that flavor of cock and won't be able to suck enough of it.

Re: What have you watched lately?
We have free HBO this weekend, so I may have a few additions to this thread over the next couple days. Watched Dick Tracy tonight for the first time in years. I don't think I've seen it since it first came out on VHS. It seems like 300 and Sin City took some of their style from it. The happy end to the movie for me was Madonna getting shot by Al Pacino.
