HA, that was my first thought to, but mostly related to people's eyes being burned out by the lens flares off the lightsabers...

And I now officially ban any and all lens flare-related jokes. Also "The 'J.J' stands for 'Jar Jar.'" I'll be a little lenient on the Star Wars/Trek stuff since that's been a big deal forever, but watch it.
Consider this your first and only warning!!!
Still no word from the official site, probably because talks are still in progress. People need to cool they shit.

If we can get serious for a moment...
I'm not displeased with the choice. I like JJ Abrams stuff. I liked Alias. I liked Lost.
I enjoyed the last two Mission Impossibles. I even liked the new Star Trek.
If there's a curve with someone like Brett Ratner on one end, Abrams is definitely closer to the other end of the spectrum. And whatever else, Abrams is better than Lucas.
Lens Flare!!

I was hoping for Matthew Vaughn, but Abrams should be good.

Eh, confirmed by Lucasfilm.
Maybe I'll check it out from the library in a few years. I don't hate Abrams, but I don't think he's anything special, either. Still haven't seen the fake Star Trek in its entirety, but wasn't impressed by what I did see.

I agree. Maybe Vaughn (or Jon Favreau, another director who I think would do well) will do one of the sequels.

So did you only see ESB and ROTJ because you were a big fan of the illustrious directing careers of Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand?

Lawrence Kasdan's involvement has me very hopeful. I found it was the dialogue more than anything else that detracted from the PT movies. The visuals were fine & there was SW feel (especially the first time you saw each of them, admit it dicks), but the words were not good. Not good at all.

The only thing I've seen from J.J. Abrams is Armageddon and I thought that sucked. But, I'm not going to judge the guy on one movie he made 15 years ago. Also, I don't get the flare lens joke.
Anyway, I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

In fairness, Marquand and Kershner weren't best known for a "meh" Star Trek film.
Of course, he did turn Trek into Star Wars, so I look forward to C-3PO telling Chewbacca that he's highly illogical.

I wonder what his involvement will be - Michael Arndt is handling the script and he's written good dialogue in the past.

He's one of six writers credited (he's one of two for "screenplay," there are two for "adaptation," and two for "story"), and it's not like Michael Bay was blameless there. And though I haven't seen the 2009 Star Trek, there were an excessive amount of lens flares, many of which were added in post-production, and people (evidently) still joke about that since the Internet is a hotbed of original thought and creative comedy.

Now we have a Disney / Abrams Star Wars project I look forward to a movie shot entirely on a hand held camera with twee songs every ten minutes.

Neither is Abrams.
