Re: How I realized I was over Star Wars completely
I don't remember saying you got personally hurt by the changes, just that they bothered or angered you; a better word would be "frustrated," I supposed, as you used.anarky wrote:I didn't say Bayts was awesome. But Obsession was one of the better SW comics. To invalidate it is a mistake, story-wise.
You're also confusing my pointing out that something is downright retarded from a storytelling perspective represents some sort of personal feeling of injury. I can ignore this pretty easily. I do, in fact. Sometimes, though, I poke my head into some spoilers and want to smash my head against a wall in frustration that Lucas is making money off this shit. It's bad. You'd even get fired from a clusterfuck like the DCnU if you botched continuity and made ridiculous choices like this. Rob Liefeld, for all our joking about him, wouldn't even do something this stupid.
To put it another way, it took about eight years to retcon Boba Fett's death (which was a mistake). It wasn't Lucas that did it. Lucas, in fact, says he sees that as not canon (though he approved tons of later stories with Boba, go figure) and stuck in a belch in ROTJ:SE to reinforce that Boba was dead.
It took just a little longer to retcon Maul's death. It went from Lucas himself saying that he showed him cut in two so people couldn't bring him back to him being the primary villain. Even the TPM kids' books were re-released to coincide with the TPM3D release, but had changes to them to indicate Maul was only mostly dead. Also, while Boba went down in one piece and, later, was the same guy (just a little smarter and more scarred), Maul went from a sort of pit bull with unquestionably fatal injuries to some sort of scheming mastermind.
I love the original SW movies. Even if I think they're much weaker, I like the prequels. I pick and choose the EU; some is excellent, some is utter horse shit. Clone Wars sometimes seems like an exercise to see how far they can go before everyone gets pissed off.
Darth Maul's return is definitely a huge deal, and deserving of scrutiny and controversy - if you disagree with it, either in the manner in which they're doing it or the very fact that they're doing it at all, then that's fine. I was apprehensive about it at first, but I like the direction it's taking in the show, and Dave Filoni has even said that they had to be extra-critical about the manner in which they did it and told that story since they knew there would be a lot of skepticism about the subject. If it's an opportunity for him just to come back and be a badass and swing his lightsaber some more for no reason, then I wouldn't care for it. If it's an opportunity to tell interesting stories about the nature of the Dark Side, advance both Obi-Wan and Darth Maul as characters, explore the Sith rule of two, and bring something new and different to a story we thought we already knew from start to finish, then I think it's worth exploring. Strange, unexpected, more than a little implausible? Sure. Bad, stupid, shitty? I think that's a little much. As to his character being different now - we barely saw him in TPM at all, and one would have to assume that he would be more than just a disposable tool for Sidious, perhaps capable of carrying on the Sith if something happened to Sidious, especially if he were raised from such a young age to be a Sith lord; to me it makes sense that Sidious would get a history or politics lesson in there now and then between lightsaber training sessions.
But to me, things like minor background characters who didn't have any lines or significant screentime in the films getting different deaths or storylines in different mediums doesn't really do any damage. I saw a comment online today from someone who was pissed off that, after buying the comics, now feels like he wasted money since he was under the impression that those were the official continuations of the movies and doesn't like that the show has changed some things and thus tainted his enjoyment of comics that he bought and read over seven years ago. (So even if you don't get personally offended by this, a lot of people do.) But Lucas has never been beholden to the EU in his own stories, as shown time and time again by the way the movies have deviated from previously-established EU. I would like to know just how much of a review process he personally has over the EU - he can't possibly read it all, though I know he has to approve major things like major character deaths - but I know that he views it as largely a separate entity from his own universe, so it shouldn't really come as a surprise at this point when something from it changes. Maybe the changes are just so much more visible to fans these days since there is so much material and information out there, and it was less obvious earlier without all the reference books and stuff (so I don't know if people were annoyed by Hobbie and Wes Janson's various fates, for example), or maybe because the show is of a much higher profile than really anything else outside the six films. I really don't know.
Do you have evidence about the changes to the 2012 TPM books? I haven't heard of this before. I also thought that the Sarlacc burp was in ROTJ since the beginning, since I can't find a list of changes that includes it and don't have the DVD with me.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Wait, you're right; the burp was there already.
I can't exactly prove the changes to the books without buying them, but, next time I'm at B&N, I'll try to get exact titles. If they're not otherwise exactly as they were in 1999, then they're damned similar.

Star Wars is now owned by Disney.
Holy shit.
Discuss. I'll be trying to find a bit of my childhood not owned by Disney, Warner, or Paramount.

Re: How I realized I was over Star Wars completely
as i said on youface, i can't help but think this is a good thing for star wars fans. disney isn't a single-man empire surrounded by yesmen, so they will actually turn down bad ideas, or hand the reins to someone else when things stop working. i'll admit, i would love to see more star wars on the big screen if it's handled properly.
Life is short. STUNT IT!

Oh, wow. You are serious.
I tried to enjoy the prequels, they just didn't do much for me. I'll go into these new movies with an open mind and hope they are better.

I just know they're gonna expand the EU into a horrible (more horrible) mish-mash of shit and that they may even rewrite the entire EU for there own purposes.

Re: How I realized I was over Star Wars completely
What's up with all the douche fanboys all over the Internet going "they're totally gonna do Marvel/Star Wars mash-up films now!"
What?!? Why would that be the first thing they'd do? Or even the millionth and first?
Star Wars fans are fucking retards.
However, I am totally down with getting a new SW film like every 3-4 years in perpituity. It'll be the new 007 franchise for the 21st Century. Especially if they're recruiting the best behind the camera talent. Everybody from Whedon to Abrams to Tarantino probably has a wet dream about collaborating on a SW film. Now it's a possibility. We've already had the limp PT from George, so anything is bound to be better than that.
I'm excited. I'll wager Newsbot is too. You can tell by her nipples.

It's plain to see in the press release that Star Wars vs Thanos will be coming out the summer after The Nightmare Before Christmas Meets The Punisher.
Stupid-ass fucktard.

Re: How I realized I was over Star Wars completely
This news absolutely blew my mind when I heard it yesterday, and I'm still processing it all (and have written about it on a few sites, so bear with me if I repeat anything).
On the one hand, I think the six current films work really well as a cohesive whole to tell one complete story, so even though George had spoken about nine or 12 films over the years, I considered them complete (and him saying it was complete, and having the word "Complete" on everything kinda reinforced that).
But, I mean, c'mon. It's a new Star Wars movie. A new Star Wars trilogy. Holy shitballs.
And nobody has any clue whatsoever as to what it will be, and speculation is a big part of the fun. Beyond Episodes VII-IX, there are rumors that there could be other SW universe films as well, which I would fully support - it could be like the Ewoks movies, only hopefully not shitty.
Without the "Episode" moniker, that would free things up to go anywhere, and could be completely different than the existing films. Joe Johnston could do the Boba Fett movie he's mentioned, Joss Whedon could do something after The Avengers 2 - essentially anything can happen at this point, and Star Wars hasn't had that for a long, long time. (Even with the new characters and plot twists in The Clone Wars, you still know how it's going to end.) Plus for the people who don't like the prequels or TCW, it's a chance to start over - and probably be disappointed all over again.
Aside from the movies, having Disney's cash means other kinds of SW projects - they'll probably be moving TCW to Disney XD and putting Detours there as well, and even though they don't have plans to do the live-action TV show yet, it's much more likely to be made now, and putting it on ABC alongside the Agent Coulson show would be too fucking awesome.
So yeah. This could go a lot of different ways, but for now, the possibilities are endless.
