who else saw it? mabs - did you see it in-theater, or just watch it at that link above?

I admit I watched the link, we ain't rich and the theatre is in the next town over and we have no car, so getting there was gonna be a pain in the ass and we are saving up for Speed Racer, I WILL get the dvd tho once it comes out
I really dug the film, but like Anarky predicted, there wasn't any "HOLY FUCK" parts, I just smiled and nodded through the whole thing. I pretty much agree fully with what you posted Vyn, tho I would place it as slightly better then Spidey 1 and not quite as good as 2, but overall enjoyable factor, more fun than any of the X properties.
Uhhh... yeah not much to say, Stan DID have a hell of a cameo tho.
ONLY gripes were not quite enough action and Iron Monger was awfully late arriving

I saw it and loved it. RDJr IS Tony Stark. The flight attendants on his private jet double as strippers! How fuckin' pimp is that?
Jarvis was great. Paltrow didn't kill it for me (although in some scenes, I swear if someone had blown in her ear you would've seen the hair puff out on the other side.) Jeff BRIDGES was perfectly sleazy ( and my friend kept leaning over and saying 'I can't believe that's The Dude' which I guess is testament to his chameleon like acting abilities).
And the last line was awesome in so many ways.
EDIT. BSLOS to come.

Sorry, to me it still looks like some shitty-ass, heavy-handed commercialism.
Then again, I always thought the only Avenger who wasn't a tool was Hulk. Thor is a tool with a mullet, Iron Man is a tool with metal boxers, and Captain America is a tool with a funny theme song. Ant-Man isn't even worth mentioning. He was a tool before someone stepped on him.

i'm generally with you - never found the avengers all too engaging until new/mighty showed up. the avengers thing i could take or leave, it was sam jackson showing up as nick fury that i thought was fuckin' cool.
EDIT: oh, and all i know is the mighty marvel marketing machine is working over-time on me this week, as i'm definitely picking up the "iron man: viva las vegas" mini series starting this wed (written by jon favreau and art by adi granov, the guy who designed the movie version of the armor - marketing genius right there, that is) and heavily considering picking up the new "invincible iron man #1" as well - yep, they're actually starting a new mini AND ongoing mere days after the release. they're getting MUCH better at this marketing thing...
EDIT 2: oh, and... yes, it was that inspiring:

I like how they set up the Mandarin as the villain in the next movie.

I honestly don't even know what you mean by that.

The whole idea of milking these goofy comic books (sorry guys) for movie products is commercialism to the Nth degree. They usually have to take OUT tons of the comic-y shit for the movies so they can have them work...if anything, this inclusion of Nick Fury should be cherished and taken as respect for the comic book.

I do partly agree, and that's why I have a problem with it. It might sound stupid, but, if they're going to make these uber-realistic (or try to) then it's a huge continuity issue to have multiple heroes.
So Tony Stark makes a suit of armor and kills (or apprehends) Iron Monger. I can buy that. But now I'm supposed to buy that there are other heroes running around, and he's never heard of them? One is an unfrozen supersoldier experiment from the 40s? Another is a gamma-irradiated supersoldier experiment from more recently (assuming they don't scrap Hulk's origin in #2)? He's never heard of either? Number three can make himself really small and keep the strength of a human? We're bending the believability factor of Iron Man here. Number five is a fucking Norse god? Everybody out of the pool.
Sadly, a lot of comics now are made essentially as movie script submissions. 30 Days of Night was produced entirely in the hopes of getting it made as a movie, and Kick-Ass had a movie deal before the first issue came out. It's almost impossible to read an interview with the creators of a new comic book who don't mention they're in talks with Hollywood, or are hoping to shop it to Hollywood.

no one said he's never heard of them... just a facetious comment akin to "what, you think you're the only {insert achievement here}?" could've just as easily been "what, you think you're the only guy who's climbed to the top of mt. everest?" that's how i took it, not that fury is actually speaking fact and stark has no idea about any of these other guys. it was just a "you're too big for your britches, son" type of comment...
that said, he could be referring to any of the heroes we already have seen: fantastic four, spidey, hulk (as below), etc... not that they're necessarily (or actually) going to be in the avengers initiative, but simply a statement about the larger marvel movie universe as a whole.
One is an unfrozen supersoldier experiment from the 40s?
do you think they'd announce on the news that they found the captain americacicle? we also haven't met him yet, so no, stark probably doesn't know he (still) exists. however, in the movie, the term "superhero" is thrown around quite a bit, so the IDEA is there - and that lends plausibility to the fact that captain america was a super(hero) soldier during WWII.
Another is a gamma-irradiated supersoldier experiment from more recently (assuming they don't scrap Hulk's origin in #2)?
looks like they aren't scrapping #1 origin, just going in a different direction story-wise. so far out of your list, this is the only one that actually exists in the iron man movie world, since he exists to the audience.
Number three can make himself really small and keep the strength of a human?
no one's seen him yet, so he doesn't exist. not even sure if he'll actually be IN the avengers movie, if they're doing a solo pic played for laughs with him. plus, they don't have a scheduled release, unlike
iron man 2, captain america, thor, and the avengers.
Number five is a fucking Norse god? Everybody out of the pool.
there are plenty of ways to treat this to lend plausibility, and he's getting his own movie. that should take care of those issues leading up to the ensemble movie. if they play him like the ultimates version, a guy who's accused of being mentally unstable for believing he's this norse god but in actuality IS... that could be interesting.
Sadly, a lot of comics now are made essentially as movie script submissions. 30 Days of Night was produced entirely in the hopes of getting it made as a movie, and Kick-Ass had a movie deal before the first issue came out. It's almost impossible to read an interview with the creators of a new comic book who don't mention they're in talks with Hollywood, or are hoping to shop it to Hollywood.
at the same time, it's good to see comic creators getting some serious money for their wares. people go where there's money, and the promise of money in comic books/comic movies can only help the industry.

Yeah, my fave part of that ending bit was the line "you've entered a new UNIVERSE, you just don't know it yet", I mean, how cool is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actual marvel universe that IS becoming a big-screen reality- a reference that was so subtle that it would seem normal to those out of the loop and kinda insane for us in the know

Looks like Marvel is really stringing all their new movies together in one universe.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW (if you actually give a shit):
Cap's Shield in Iron man
Captain America’s red, white and blue shield appears near the 1 hr 30 min mark in Iron Man.The scene is the one where Pepper Potts/Gwyneth Paltrow walks in on Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr. as he attempts to remove his suit after returning from his showdown with the fighter jets. You may recall the scene more clearly knowing that this is right around when Stark says to Potts,”Let’s face it, this is not the worst thing you’ve caught me doing.”
The Super Soldier Serum is in The Incredible Hulk
Universal has released a new batch of photos from The Incredible Hulk. The photo above is significant because it’s our first look at the super serum that will be (or was) used to create the superhero known as Captain America. Apparently in the film, William Hurt’s General Thunderbolt Ross tells Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky about a weapons program initiated during World War II to create a “super soldier” before giving him the injection.

That doesn't look like the shield in Iron Man to me. It looks more like a piece of equipment.

I just can't get excited about this. It's like if The DaVinci Code had been a good movie (I understand it blew). I hated the book, so it could be the best movie ever made, and I'd still be, "Meh, it'll be on HBO." And there are so many comic book movies now, I don't feel that "This is based on a comic, so watch it, or they may not be more" loyalty.
I know it's stupid, but I feel like I should watch Speed Racer four times before seeing this just to piss off the Hollywood machine.

i don't know about the "there may not be more" mentality... i don't think that's what anyone's feeling. in actuality, we KNOW for a FACT that there WILL be more, as announced immediately following the opening weekend for IM.
I know it's stupid, but I feel like I should watch Speed Racer four times before seeing this just to piss off the Hollywood machine.
that makes very little sense (and i know you qualified it with the "i know it's stupid" but hear me out...) - i could see if you were going to an art-house movie four times, but they're both summer blockbusters, both pieces in the hollywood machine. the distinction being made here is strange. if it's based solely on the imbalance of the reviews, then that's just flip-side knee-jerk reactionary contrarian weirdness - the reviews should have no bearing on YOUR opinion of a movie, negative or positive. saying you're not going to go to IM based on the positive reviews and are going to SR based on the negative is just the same as saying you're going to skip SR because of the bad reviews and only go to IM because it got good ones. who gives a fuck what the critics think? they are there to give opinions to people who can't think for themselves. as someone (the only one?) who's seen both in-theater now, i can say i had a blast each time. pick one or the other, i guarantee you're not going to be disappointed.

all's Nark is saying, I think, is that he believes Speed Racer by way of doing piss-poorly at the box-office despite awesome peer reviews (was it GG who gave it a merely decent review?? No slag but he IS of a different generation, and as I said in my comments the film really was for fans first and foremost, being well versed with the original I was hit much harder than a casual viewer) deserves his money more, period, as it appears it doesn't matter how good a movie is, it is EASY to swiftboat a film out of existence. Half of the bad reviews I've seen were full of realy glaring errors (more than once the lack of the MACH 5 bemoaned, when it was in what sems to be the fave race of most viewers, and by far the longest)
vyn you all about contrariansim these days huh

??
