Re: What have you watched lately?
i finished 'rise of cobra' a week or so ago... apparently it either didn't look nearly as bad to me as the TF movies do, or it didn't define my childhood as much as TF did, since i haven't placed a life-long ban on watching it. that said, it was pretty much crap. the icing on the cake was governor weatherby swann/the infinity Q-45 guy as the president of the united states. he didn't even bother to cover up his british accent... WTF?

Re: What have you watched lately?
Ring of Bright Water: A maudlin movie by the maudlin folks who brought us Born Free, this time about a maudlin otter. If I hadn't been watching with my daughter, I would've joked that the guy who kills the tame otter in the end (in one of the most anticlimactic movie deaths ever) was the true hero. (Seriously. Dude moves from London to a tiny village in Scotland, and everyone knows he has a pet otter, and the lady doctor is banging him, and all the townsfolk gossip about how weird it is for a dude to have a pet otter, and he goes back to London on business and the moron doesn't figure out that the otter following the lady doctor, which she's talking to and calling the same name as the Londoner's otter, isn't a wild otter and cuts it down with a shovel for absolutely no reason. Stupid as that bit was, it actually became sort of funny when the lady just gives him an exasperated, "Angus!" Sort of like, "Oh, Angus, you stepped in wet concrete again," and not, "Angus, you just fucking brutally murdered an animal you'd have to be fucking retarded to not have recognized, and now I'm going to have to goddamn explain to my boyfriend that his beloved pet got sliced in half by a fucking fucktard simply because he was there and said fucktard apparently has a hard-on for killing otters for no goddamn reason. Seriously, you fucker! What the fuck? That intense pain you feel is me kicking your fucking otter-killing boner repeatedly with my fucking steel-toed boots. When I'm done with that, I'm going to shit in your mouth until you suffocate. Stupid fuck!")
But she was there, and luckily missed that part (and had trouble understanding all the Scottish accents)and figured the otter was one of the wild ones who showed up a few minutes later. So she was happy and said she liked the movie.

Because a wild otter is so dangerous it needs to be attacked and killed on sight. Wild otters being worse than sharks, bears, and lions combined. That's like killing a wild chiuaiua.

I went and saw Dark of the Moon today and the actual real highlight was seeing the first trailer for Brad Bird's (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) first live action film.

Brad Bird has the best directorial track record in Hollywood. Admittedly, he's only made three films, and they're all animated, but, fuck, Ratatouille is his "worst" by a long shot, and it's an awesome film.

Cars 2
I cannot express how pleasantly surprised I was here. I expected the worst Pixar movie to date by a long shot, since Cars was their weakest film, and this looked like a blatant cash grab, and since the main character is Mater, who annoyed the living shit out of me the first time around.
I can't say it's their best (this IS Pixar, after all), but it was immensely better than the first, due in no small part to Mater being a main character instead of comic relief. That might sound paradoxical, but, after a few minutes of Jeff Foxworthy flashbacks, they were forced to actually make him a real character.

Re: What have you watched lately?
i like the first one for the 'get back to roots' message. i wasn't really sure what, if any, message they were trying to espouse in cars 2. that said, it was entertaining.

Re: What have you watched lately?
I still can't bring myself to watch Cars.
It looks as dull as A Bug's Life, but with one of the least funny people ever, Larry The One Note Hack.
The last time I watched a racing movie made by people I like was Talladega Nights, and that turned out to be 90 minutes of pure horse shit.

I must conclude you do not like racing movies, period, and that is your reason for hating Speed Racer. I don't mean this in an insulting way, but I cannot fathom someone not laughing their ass off for 90 minutes during Talledega Nights.
Then again, I grew up around the sort of folks it's spoofing, so maybe it just hit home more for me.

No, I just don't like terrible racing movies.anarky wrote:I must conclude you do not like racing movies, period, and that is your reason for hating Speed Racer. I don't mean this in an insulting way, but I cannot fathom someone not laughing their ass off for 90 minutes during Talledega Nights.
Granted, I'm hard pressed to come up with a good racing movie, but that's beside the point. And I never said Cars sucked, I just don't care to see it.
Since I hate NASCAR and the whole obsession with it, I assumed I'd love Talladega Nights, since they were making fun of it all. But alas, it was shit.anarky wrote:Then again, I grew up around the sort of folks it's spoofing, so maybe it just hit home more for me.

Re: What have you watched lately?
I hate NASCAR and that shit, too, but I think Talladega Nights required a bit more familiarity with the stupidity of it. I grew up in Charlotte; it's imfuckingpossible to not be familiar with it to an extent.Diabolical wrote:Since I hate NASCAR and the whole obsession with it, I assumed I'd love Talladega Nights, since they were making fun of it all. Commando is playing on late night TV. Its so full of hilarious cliches. Its funny how when I was twelve it seemed perfectly reasonable he could survive a 1000 ft drop off the landing gear of the airplane because he landed in a MARSH! My favorite part so far is how many security guards work at the mall. That place has the highest ratio of on duty security guards ever. Its like 50 guards show up for Ahnuld to beat up. And they're all armed! Ha! Awesome. And then he drives the car into the phonepole at full speed, then turns to Rae Dawn Chong and asks if she's okay.

I saw the end fight of Commando not too long ago. I forgot that Arnold never has to reload and can somehow fire automatic weapons while running with amazing accuracy.Rollo Tomassi wrote:Commando is playing on late night TV. And after killing dozens upon dozens of bad guys without a scratch, its the main bad guy that finally hurts him.

When he's getting ready to drop sully off the bridge, you can see a rope around his ankle.
After he rolls the car with Rae Dawn Chong & asks her if she's ok, they drive away in a spotless car.
2 points of interest if you happen to see it again any time soon & remember this post.
Oh, and I've been watching the video for Katy Perry's Friday Night (TGIF) over and over. I'm horrified to admit that I've actually really liked 3/4 radio singles from her last album.
