Re: Hockey '08-'09
Detroit has a lot going on in terms of exits.
Chelios is gone - too old.
Conklin is gone - making room for Howard.
And unless he agrees to a big paycut Hossa is probably gone.
Samulesson, McCarty (he's still with Detroit?), Downey & Kopecky are all unrestricted.
Hudler & Leino are restricted free agents.

Re: Hockey '08-'09
Conklin reminded me of some new superstitions...If you have Conklin, you will win the outdoor game. If you win the outdoor game, you will lose the Stanley Cup. And if Conklin is your backup, you will lose the Stanley Cup. Anyway, I heard the Wings plan on using Howard as the backup.
Detroit will probably keep Samulesson. Someone will sign Chelios. Probably Chicago.
Eddie Belfour wants to play again. He asked his agent to see if any NHL teams will invite him to camp. He's 44. Didn't play in 08-09. Played in Sweeden's 2nd Division in 07-08.

If you are reading this thread, I'll assume you heard about Patrick Kane getting arrested for beating that cab driver.

Have we really not discussed hockey since this????
I'm guessing Cappy likes the fact that Nik Antropov will live on as a trivia answer based on this:

Red Wings are 2-0, on their way to:
82-0 regular season
4 GFA
1.5 GAA
16-0 playoff run
Stanley Cup #12
Creation of a Lidstrom cyborg that can never retire.

Re: Hockey '08-'09
328 goals for the season if they maintain this pace.... sounds awesome right? Well almost....

Just take a few seconds to look at those numbers. Unreal.

Re: Hockey '08-'09
Scoring an average of 5.58 goals a game is incredible...until you consider they also allowed and average of 3.93 per game.
By comparison, The 1995-96 Red Wings scored a 3.96 average to a 2.20 goals against average.

Forgot to bring this up last week...
I turned on NHL Network, and they were showing the celebration in Winnipeg before their first game. Naturally, they had a band. Being the hockey craving maniacs they are, one might think they would go out and get a big name act to celebrate the return of the Jets. No. They got Bachman Turner Overdrive, who can be found at just about any small casino or county fair. Way to reach for the stars, Winnipeg.

Well, they were the Atlanta Thrashers a few months ago...
New name.
New location.
Same team.

Randy Bachman is from Winnipeg. To them, that's like having a supergroup formed from members of U2 & the Rolling Stones play with Kanye West, Jay-Z and the dude from Linkin Park on vocals.

Re: Hockey '08-'09
You don't see Buffalo bragging about the Goo Goo Dolls.
I heard the Jets announcer took a shot at Thrasher fans. The fan's weren't the problem in Atlanta. It was the ownership.
So Atlanta lost 2 teams to Canada now. It would be funny if the Coyotes move to Quebec, Kansas City, or something like that. Then, the new Jets start losing money and end up moving to Phoenix.
And because of Atlanta/Winnipeg, there has to be another re-alignment. The rumor about Detroit going to the East isn't true (yet). No official decision has been made. It will probably take a while because moving one team could piss off another team.

Re: Hockey '08-'09
The 3 teams in the mix are Columbus, Detroit & Nashville. It's my understanding that Columbus is the furthest east - but it's also my understanding that Gary would like to provide the extra Original 6 rival games that would occur should the Wings move over. We'll have to wait & see I guess, but it would be sweet for the Wings to get the move to the east to cut down on the travel.
Thinking outside the box, if I was in a decision-making position I'd suggest a 3 year rotation with each of the 3 aforementioned teams revolving through the open spot in the eastern conference.
