Game of Thrones (HBO)

most tv sucks these days, but there are some shining examples of good writing, acting, camera work, etc... we call those Deadwood and Arrested Development. Family Guy sucks ass, though...

I finally started watching this show, not having read any of the books, and have watched the first six episodes in the last few days. I just saw the part where Khal Drogo gives Viserys his golden crown - goddamn, this show is awesome!
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Don't get me wrong, the show is awesome (well, I've only seen the first season but I'm assuming the following season(s) are just as good). But the books are 100 times better.

If they weren't, I can't imagine anyone making a show about them.

Pfffft. They made Dan Brown's books into films and those are shitty.
The same goes for Patterson's Alex Cross novels.
And triple for Steffie Meier's Twinkie Vampire series.

Movies and TV shows don't necessarily need good source material.

That's pretty funny. Considering they go to great lengths describing what a manly looking uggo Brienne is in the novels.
'They' being GRRM.

Hey anarky!!!! Remember when we told you Firefly was awesome and you put off watching it for a decade?

Yeahhh.....The Game of Thrones books are like that. Squared.
But read 'em before you watch 'em. As delightful as the show is, it doesn't hold a candle to the source material.

Season 4 off to a pretty good start tonight. Nice to meet Prince Oberyn, The Viper of Dorne. Should lead up to a very nice confrontation later in the season (which, if you're a sharp-eyed viewer you've seen a very brief snippet of during any advertising for Season 4). We'll also be treated to Joffrey's wedding and Dany dealing with the final slave city (no, I can't remember the nuances of any of them either).

Any other big ticket events from the books on the horizon that might occur in season 4?

Characters who'll bite the big one include:

Joffrey
Tywin
Mance Rader???
Who else again?

I have trouble remembering which events(deaths, etc) happen in which books at this point.
The main one I remember from book 3 is a certain someone getting shivved whilst on the shitter.

Have they (the TV guys) said how they're doing books 4 and 5? Since it's the same time frame, I assume they'll just be jumping back and forth between the two books. But do they have enough material for three seasons, or will they try to cram everything into just two?

I believe that the current plan is to end the series after seven seasons, with Martin recently telling Weiss and Benioff his plans for the end of the books so that they can put the proper elements into place. Obviously there's no way in fuck that he'll finish the books by the time the TV show catches up with him. But it seems that the events of books four through seven will take place in seasons five through seven.

I'm trying to remain spoiler-free – I don't know if it takes place this season, but the only thing I really know is that Catelyn comes back as a zombie woman or something – and I'll be watching the series as it airs this season. Arya and the Hound kicked some major ass in this episode!
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Will anyone give a fuck about the books if the show is the "first appearance" of the ending of the story? Hmmmm. Likely they will, but it certainly would be a bit of a middle finger to all the readers who likely feel like they're "owed" first dibs at the ending. I kinda feel that way myself.

I don't think you can cram the final four books into three seasons without doing a serious disservice to the story.

And the TV fans are Johnny-come-latelies and should have to wait for the final season for like twenty years. Fuck them guys.

They could split further from the books, the way True Blood did. Those books and the show started very similar, but went in way different directions. Might actually not be a bad idea.

Re: last night's episode, people online aren't exactly being coy about Joffrey choking to death. Luckily I watched it when it aired, but either way, that shit cray. As has been said, it was nice to get a sort of "greatest hits" of why the kid was such a little fucker throughout the wedding, but it was still pretty intense watching him die like that. I like how they left it ambiguous as to who did the deed, and how exactly it happened – I'm assuming we'll learn more eventually.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

I don't remember seeing much of this in the books (after a few thousand pages and you tend to forget bits here and there), but this is probably pretty close.
