Re: What have you watched lately?
I kinda think the point of the film is that neither man could ultimately "change" the other. The film is a 'Romantic Tragedy' of sorts between the two men. Made clear by the tearful serenade at the end. I do think you should check out his other films. PunchDrunkLove is his worst film. And 'worst' for PT Anderson doesn't mean bad. Just worse than the others. Magnolia and There Will Be Blood are his best films. Hard Eight is decent, but it's his first film, and it kinda shows him perfecting his process. The performances he gets out of people in his films is fantastic.
You'll not be for the worse for checking his other films out. He's probably one of the top five true auteurs making films currently.

Better than Tim Burton? That's high praise, saying someone's better than a guy who's done nothing but remakes and adaptations for over two decades!!

He's one of my friend's favorite directors, which is why I've seen these recently. I definitely want to see Magnolia and There Will Be Blood, as I've heard from others that they're his best as well.RoIIo Tomassi wrote:I kinda think the point of the film is that neither man could ultimately "change" the other. Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Looper - really good time travel flick that doesn't have any really obvious bits that make no sense.

I watched a movie called The FP. A guy at work had it and kept bringing it up. It was the worst movie I've ever seen. Literally.
It's a post-apocolyptic movie where to "warring factions" fight each other...by playing "Beat Beat Revelation" (a Dance Dance Revolution knockoff) and, at one point, someone challenges someone else to "a beat off".

I saw about 10-20 minutes of the first Jurassic Park movie over the weekend. In that short bit I saw, three things made it look dated.
1. Samuel L. Jackson had hair. Not much, but it was there none the less.
2. Smoking indoors and no one complained.
3. The technology - surveillance cameras were huge. Also, computers change so much, are the easiest way to make a movie look dated.

Taken 2. Not as good as the first one. It was decent, but the story was contrived. And the climax was weak. But Neeson kicks all kinds of Albanian ass. As it takes place in Istanbul, I kept thinking "Hey, I've climbed that tower in Assassin's Creed. I've run over that rooftop.." etc.
It seemed to do decent BoxOffice so we'll probably see Taken3 at some point.

I watched The Avengers on DVD last night. Still an awesome movie and it's probably better the second time through since I can stop it and rewind it and look at the small things. I definitely hope they make a part 2.

They've got over one-and-a-half billion reasons to do a sequel, so it's coming in 2015.Slicker wrote:I watched The Avengers on DVD last night. I wanted to get the big-ol' box set with The Avengers and their individual films, but it was delayed to next year since they didn't license the briefcase design from its actual manufacturer. Damn.
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Argo. Excellent suspense film about the Iranian Hostage crisis. Probably a strong contender for Oscar Best Pic next year. Michael Parks cameos as Jack Kirby! Sweet!

Damn, he's just a cameo? I was really hoping they split from historical fact and Jack Kirby singlehandedly took down the Ayatollahs.
Y'all on FB are probably sick of hearing it, but it's just fucking awesome that someone is showing The King some love onscreen, even if it's such a small role.

Re: What have you watched lately?
Eyes of Laura Mars was playing on TV this morning. I missed the first half hour or so, but got the gist of it. I only finished watching because it was the film Kershner made that got him noticed by Lucas for the ESB directing gig. It was fun seeing young Raul Julia, Brad Dourif, and Rene Auberjanois in supporting roles. The twist ending is such a tired trope nowadays, but I'm not sure if it was back in 1978. Tommy Lee Jones as a mullet haired detective is a fun reminder of how 70s the 70s were.

The Curse of Frankenstein is on right now. Its from 1957. Peter Cushing is sporting a mean pair of mutton chops. Oh, and Christopher Lee is the Creature.
Edit: TCM is showing the Mummy and The Gorgon also starting Cushing and Christopher Lee. I didn't know they did any movies together.

Re: What have you watched lately?
They actually did a shit-ton of horror flicks together in England (I think mostly for a company called Hammer). IIRC, one reason Christopher Lee was excited to play in SW was because Cushing had.
