What have you watched lately?

movies are cool. here is a place to talk about how cool they are. or maybe how much they suck, sometimes. like that fucking piece of shit 'mac and me'. worst fucking movie ever, a two-hour ad for fucking coca-cola.

we've been on a roll watching netflix (quickster? quichester?) movies we received in the mail.

love and other drugs - pretty good, i never thought i'd have a smidgen of sympathy for a drug rep. and maybe i still don't. what's up with jake ggyylleennhhaall and anne hathaway showing their ass and tits (respectively) in movies they're in together?

the switch - meh. it would be a chick flick if they made you care about the characters, like, at all. the kid was sorta cute, but sorta creepy. it seemed to drag on in parts, they could have easily made this movie an hour long.

the social network - jesse eisenberg mumbles even more in this movie than ever before. i didn't think that was possible. i understand he's trying to emulate the way zuckerberg speaks, but really... it's a movie, you can enunciate a bit more just like the sound engineers don't need to make everything so 'realistic' with layers upon layers of background noise that just serve to make me turn up my TVs built-in stereophonic speakers to the point of eardrum bleeding. i get it, they're having a conversation in a club with loud music so that even when the one guy yells at the top of his lungs it's like he's whispering. that annoys me in real life, i don't need that to also annoy me in a movie, which i'm watching merely to escape from the things that annoy me in real life.

also, there's no way he could have set up facemash.com in one night's four-hour drunken coding binge because it takes up to 48 hours (but usually 24) for a domain name to propagate. the only way he could have launched that night was if he already planned on creating the site and had the domain name set up with a nameserver that pointed traffic to his webserver, unless it was localized to JUST the campus (because then he could manually route requests for that domain name from within the local network to his webserver.

Stand By Me is playing on TV today. First off, Jerry O'Connell isn't as fat as I remembered him. In fact, compared to fat kids today, he's downright sveldt. Secondly, why do they edit the barfing out of the 'barf-o-Rama' story Gordy tells? Is that really more offensive than showing an autopsy on CSI? Network TV, you have goofy standards.

Saw Immortals the other night.
It belongs firmly in between 300 (awesome visuals) and Clash of the Titans (poor story).

J. Edgar. A decent biopic that focuses on his unrequited gay relationship with his 2nd in command Clyde Tolver. Could have been tightened up in places. And seriously, with all the advancements in SFX over the years, the 'aged' make-up looked like shit. But it will probably garner some Academy Noms. And they're deserved. Just don't know if they're good enough to win.

I would like to see J Edgar, but I read it was very toned down with respect to any salacious details about his personal life (even speculative ones) and thus a bit boring. I figure I will get to it about a year after I finally watch The King's Speech - whenever that turns out to be.

Does it address the myth that he was a cross-dresser?

I mean, the guy was gayer than Carson Kressley in assless chaps at a Village People concert in a San Francisco prison. But there's no evidence that he was actually a transvestite, as most people believe.

They have a scene after his mother dies where he puts her clothes on. He was very close to his mother, so it was much more an 'I miss you so much I'm crazy" moment and not a "Damn, I love dressing up in women's clothes. I'm gonna do it all the time!" moment.

After we left the theatre, I said Hoover is probably rolling in his grave. Not because of the flagrant homo overtones of the film, but because they got a Wop to play him.

And shame on you JJ for not seeing King's Speech yet.

I agree with Diabolical on Immortals...it looked fantastic and I wanted to love that movie, so it fell flat for me in terms of story.

We saw The Muppets on Thanksgiving and it was pretty cool...I was bummed that Frank Oz wasn't involved, though.

We're getting free Encore this weekend. So far I've watched parts of all 3 Lord of the Rings movies and Heartbreak Ridge. I started watching Clockwork Orange since I've never seen it, but it was late and I fell asleep.

Back to LOTR...if you had your choice, Liv Tyler or Miranda Otto (Eowyn)?

No three ways. Agent Smith wouldn't approve.

I took the kids to see it. Fun, but not as randomly zany as the original Muppet Movie. It traded on making jokes about the first film a lot. I'm trying to figure if the Benson reference was an inside joke. It's just such an obscure reference that no kid is going to get. But seeing the opening of the Muppet Show play out on the big screen got me choked up a little. Overall, it was a fun film. And the closing credits sung to 'ManaMana' was wonderful. The Toy Story short at the beginning was great also.

i thought 'the muppets' was a lot of fun. the non-existent fourth wall was rampant, and a lot of the jokes seemed to be pulled directly from the names of entries on www.TVTropes.org. i see your point about the nods to the first movie.

I was saddened to see the local theater--the only one within a 20-minute drive and the one with $2.50 movies for all showings on Wednesdays--isn't playing The Muppets. I can understand their desire to have Twilight 4: We Broke This Shitty Book Into Two Movies Just Because Harry Potter Did It. But Happy Feet 2: Return Of The Fucking Creepy-Ass Zombie Penguins and Jack And Jill AKA Please Send Adam Sandler Five Bucks Because He Really Really Needs It?

Shit. And they don't list showtimes for next week at all, though I doubt they'll get Muppets after the fact.

according to my wife, the last twilight book was written as 'part 1' and 'part 2' in one book, so there's that. not saying it's not also retarded that way.
