Very nice :)

My LCS guy advised I could have early dibs on the FCBD dollar bins, so I went back today with lists & grabbed 29 books for $14.50. Half & half Marvel GI Joe (between issues 80-100) and various Spider-Man stuff from the Clone era that I "likely" don't have. They'll give me an opportunity to create & update some new lists at the very least.

I'm hoping the LCS across the river (the only one of the four shops in the are that actually does FCBD) has a nice selection of cheapie books to go thru on Saturday. I'm also hoping I can stock up on DrawerBoxes without going bankrupt. And maybe a figure or two as well.

Anyway this week was a small week with only 12 books.

Annihilators 3. The galactic super-team continues to fight the Dire Wraiths on ROMs homeworld (whilst being legally obligated to not mention ROM while doing so) and Rocket and Groot continue their back-up adventure.

Avengers Academy 13. The Academy kids invite the Young Allies over for a formal dance/mixer and lots of hilarity ensues. Hank Pym shags Tigra. And Firestar gets pissed when she finds out ex-fiance Vance Astro is sleeping with his new girlfriend Ultragirl after he had said he wanted to wait until he and Firestar were maried. So that was pretty entertaining.

Avengers Academy Giant Size 1. What was originally solicited as a couple crossover annuals of Avengers Academy and Young Allies, gets mashed together in a $7.99 80 page giant after YA got cancelled last year. In it, they all team up to fight Arcade. Arcade is pretty much the dumbest villain ever when you think about how he sinks millions of dollars into designing these "MurderWorlds" all the time, and then never actually assassinates anyone, and therefore never gets paid. Shittiest assassin ever. His overhead must be unthinkable. And then invariably at the end of the issue you find out its an Arcade robot and the real one got away. Which thankfully they avoid in this one, but he's still a shitty Claremont character.

Deadpool Annual 1. A continuation of the Amazing Spidey Annual from last month, "Identity Wars" continues. In this alternate world Victor Von Doom is the Deadpool version named DeathWish all decked out in a green version of the DP costume, and Wade Wilson is the kingpin of New York and wearing a regal red Dr. Doom looking costume. Fairly clever story and not touched by Daniel Way which means it doesn't suck ass.

Speaker For The Dead 4. The Ender series continues. Rereading these comic adaptations makes me want to go back and reread the actual books.

Heroes For Hire 6. Spider-Man guest stars, much to the chagrine of series regular Paladin, who sees Spidey as a flamboyant overacheiver.

Jonah Hex 67. A man scars his face and contracts the Pox in order to frame Hex for several dozen murders of men, women, and children. But Hex flips the stakes by being a capitalistic opportunist we all know and love.

Moon Knight 1. Bendis and Maleev's much hyped run begins on the series, and I found it a bit underwhelming. Maleev's art looks especially rugged here. I did not realize the villain was Mr. Hyde despite them naming him in the first panel he shows up. I figured Hyde was a random name like Smith or Jones or Appleby or something, thats how unlike the classic Daredevil villain the guy looked. And the Loony Multiple Personalities hook just doesn't ring true. People with MP disorders don't actively choose who and what their alternate personalities are, so I can't conceive that Moon Knight would create Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine as new personalities. That's just now how it works. Plus, I'm gonna make a prediction right here that Steven Grant, Spector's other personality is in fact the new West Coast Kingpin of Crime. And if it turns out he isn't, then it's because everybody under the sun guessed that, and Bendis pulled an Armageddon2001 Capt Atom on everybody and hastily decided someone else is the Kingpin to "throw us off". I will give this exactly one more issue, but I'm not hopeful.

Official Index 13. The Avengers and Captain America get more indexed issues. We're into the Heroes Reborn and beyond stuff. Egads those were some crap comics by Liefeld. Euuch.

Secret Six 33. The end of the Hell storyline. Brilliant brilliant writing. Quite possibly the only thing decent coming out of DC anymore (besides Jonah Hex and possibly Batgirl). These characters are so much ambivalent fun. you simulataneously feel bad and relish in rooting for the badguys every issue. Highest recommendations.

Wolverine/Hercules 3. Herc has to figure out how to un-Medusa Wolverine and Matsuo makes his move to lead the Hand. Oh and some guy "Releases the Kraken!" on the last page. Funny stuff, Herc actually points out thats not the creature's correct nomenclature a few pages earlier as he goes off on the "Clash of the Titans" film being factually inaccurate. So that was amusing.

X-Men:Prelude to Schism 1. It is quite possible to be a good writer, and yet be a boring writer. Paul Jenkins writing is as boring as wood. I'm optimistic about Jason Aaron writing the "Schism" Event in the X-Books in a couple months, but this prelude mini series by Jenkins is as flat as three day old soda.

PS. A few weeks back, I made a comment about the 5 Ronin miniseries and how I wish they had made the David Aja covers the regular covers instead of the HTF variants becuase it was such gorgeous art. Well, I found an auction on ebay last week where the guy had the entire series for 4.99 and all but the Punisher issue were the variant covers. So I rebought the entire series for a buck a piece. Now I just have to track down the Aja Punisher cover at some point. Yay me.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I didn't make it to FCBD. However, we went to San Diego to visit her mom. On the way, there's a Borders store right off the freeway. Last time I was there, I went in, looked around, came out, and told Mrs A that, if the chain closed more stores, this would be the first to go. It was messed up, and had always been one of the more immaculate stores. The next day the news reported another batch was closing, and this one was, indeed, among them. Today was the first chance I got to go by there, and they had nine days left. Graphic novels and comic trade paperbacks were 60% off (aside from young adult and kids GN's, which were 50% off, but I saw nothing that looked intriguing aside from possibly Runaways, which they only had one later volume of). With the additional 10% off with the rewards card, it came to about 64% off. Beat up copies for half price at Comic-Con can't come close to touching that.

I'd finally made a nice list of all the series I'm looking to get in paperback, and which ones I have and need, and basically tore through what was left, grabbing everything. The only things I left that held any interest at all were the Stephen King Dark Tower and Stand adaptations, since I hadn't included them on my list (and didn't know which I had) and because adaptations lost out in favor of original material (with one exception), and Runaways, because, like I said, there was only one volume from later in the series, and I haven't read enough (read: any) to know if I'd want to get that far. Okay, I did pass on a Preacher hardcover, simply because the marked down price would still be more than I can get the paperback for.

Plus the cashier forgot to mark the books with a sharpie. So they're all still near mint, for what that's worth.

Here's what I got--I know it's disjointed, but most of these are series I've already decided I want to read:

Fables 2: Animal Farm (really was hoping for some volumes beyond what the library had, but any's better than none)
Invincible 13: Growing Pains
Kill Shakespeare 1: A Sea of Troubles (looked pretty interesting, and I figured seven bucks was a decent deal for six issues worth of story)
Punisher Max 7: Man of Stone
Punisher Max 8: Widowmaker
Punisher Max 9: Long Cold Dark
Scalped 2: Casino Boogie
Sense and Sensibility (more for my wife--I like Austen and want to read it, but prefer Bronte... they had a graphic novel adaptation of Jane Eyre, but anyone can adapt a public domain comic, and I figured Marvel had a better chance of not sucking)
The Walking Dead 8: Made to Suffer

Not bad for about $54, eh? I felt sorta bad for not getting Anarky Jr something comic-wise. They just didn't have anything that would've worked for her. And their kids' books were cleaned out. I nixed a few Christmas things and a fucking Barbie CD (no issues with her playing with Barbies or with kids' music, but, hell no), but got her a stuffed animal. Also picked up a few CDs: the new (relatively) Franz Ferdinand, the new Steve Miller, a Cephas and Wiggins compilation (they were an awesome duo of Carolina bluesmen and two of the most unique voices in the blues), and the soundtrack to Mongol (which doesn't have the badass Russian-language rock song from the closing credits, but the rest of the music was quite good and memorable enough to drop a few bucks on). Plus for the Mrs, the new(est) Paula Cole and that Fiona Apple album with the insanely long title.

And recent library check-outs include Tintin 2, Unknown Soldier 1-2 (the only volumes they have), Fables 13 (the last of what they've got), Muppets On the Road, and Archie Marries (since their kids' selection is pretty weak, and they don't understand things like "Tintin shouldn't be in the kids' section if Little Black Sambo is banned" and "that 'mature readers' label on Fables should be an indication it doesn't belong in the young adult section").

Big schwack of tpbs in the mail today from ebay, averaged around $10 shipped so I'm ok with the deal:

New X-Men 2,3
Wolverine (Claremont/Miller)
Marvels
Masterworks FF 1,2
Masterworks Avengers 1
Masterworks X-Men 1,2
Masterworks Cap 1
Masterworks Hulk 1

Many of the Masterworks I had in hardback, but I'm going to ebay them to recoup some of the cost. I much prefer having tbs of these now that Tom is actually willing to sit and read them, I don't want to hamper his enjoyment by harping at him about keeping shit mint while he soaks it in.

How far do these things go in Masterworks? It looks to me like they're woefully incomplete, and the Essentials series is slightly more complete, but eliminates color altogether.

Batman Inc. #6 - Still haven't read #1-5 yet. Hoping I didn't waste $18.

Batman: Arkham City #1 - The Arham Asylum game kicked all kinds of ass (it had the real Batman, Joker and Harley voices) and this prequel to the sequel is written by Paul Dini (as are the games), so this was a no-brainer pick up.

Daredevil: Reborn #4 - I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess Matt decides to become DD again.

Punisher Max #13 - The only one I have read so far. Now this arc feels more like a MAX arc, almost an Ennis-written arc.

The Walking Dead Compendium 1 - Via Amazon. Part of my anniversary present. This sumbitch is heavy(!) - it must've cost Amazon a fortune to send.

I have everything except the LL928 set with the big ship. It usually goes for around $100 on ebay and I don't want to spend that much for it. I do have an ebay story which you just reminded me of. I'll tell it over in the LEGO Topic. And now onto this week's funny books...

20 issues this week. I avoided Flashpoint 1 and continue to avoid most of Fear Itself.

Amazing Spidey 660. The FF team fights the Sinister Six (or robot dupicates of them) while Doc Ock and the real team invade the Baxter Building. Man, Doc Ock is becoming a real A-Lister, taking on Tony Stark, and now Reed Richards.. You go Otto! Spider-Island also continues to percolate with glimpes of more citizens getting Spidey powers thanks to the Jackal.

New Avengers 12. The 1950s team fights the Red Skull (or an impostor) and Sabretooth beheads him. Mockingbird goes into surgery. Victoria Hand turns out to be a double agent (or does she? Hmmm...I think she might turn out to be a triple agent).

Batgirl 21. Steph fights yet another new rogue, and Wendy decides to head to Nanda Parbat to do something about her handicap.

Birds of Prey 12. The team breaks into an impenetrable building to find a secret computer that supposedly doesn't exis....ZOMG, IT'S A TRAP!!! It's Ragdoll's freaky brother/sister come to kill you all!!

Daredevil Reborn 4. Matt gets schooled by a way too intellectual 8 year old blind kid on what it means to be a hero, and shames him into going back to New York just in time for the series relaunch in July. I loved how Matt's "temporary" DD costume was a dead ringer for the look he sported in the old made for TV Hulk movie. That made me chuckle.

Formic Wars 5. The Formics have hit Earth. China is burning. Humanity is reeling. Seriously, if I didn't know how all of this ended already, I would say they were fucked.

FF 3. Hickman's opus continues. We discover Val accidentally let four otherworld Reed's onto Earth and they are preparing to destroy 616 to save the rest of the multiverse. So natch Val and Dr. Doom, as part of the new Future Foundation, cordially invite all of the FFs foes (Mad Thinker, High Evolutionary, The Wizard, etc) to a symposium on how to hypothetically defeat Reed. Refreshments will be served. This series is awesome.

Flash 12. The end of the series. Leads into Flashpoint. A whole lot of bleh.

GIJoe 1. The Cobra Civil War begins! (or rather continues from the zero issue, but you get the hyperbole). After much self debate, I bought the Baroness cover. But I intend to track down the others when they get cheaper down the road. In the first chapter, Baroness orders a team of Sniper-Vipers to do some damage to a squad of Joes. Four guys who were given codenames just to die get spacked, while Stalker, Leatherneck, and Recondo survive. And somebody(I'm totally guessing Zartan) gets into the Pit posing as Hawk and starts wreaking havoc.

Incredible Hulks 627 and 628. Hulk and Red She Hulk (aka his estranged wife Betty Banner) along with Tyrannus continue to fight over the mythical 'Pandora's Box' (which is actually an urn) in and above Rome.

Journey Into Mystery 623. The one Fear Itself tie-in I bought this week. Thankfully the tie-in is extremely marginal. And the story line of this re-directed series intrigues me. Kieron Gillen is doing something very interesting with the newly ressurected and now young Loki, god of mischief. He sincerely wants to turn over a new leaf and not fall back into the routine of villainy, but will his nature let him? And will the rest of Asgard? Everybody assumes he was and always will be who he is, and treat him as such. I'm enjoying finding out so much, I'm willing to cross my self imposed Fear Itself line.

New Mutants 25. A new direction for the series! DnA take over writing duties and give Dani's team a new objective. Tying up all the X-Men continuity's loose ends. First up, find out what happened to X-Man Nate Grey.

PunisherMAX 13. Frank is in prison, and continues to flash back to his post-war life, seeing many similarities between the two.

Red Robin 23. Tim is the new target of an Assassination Challenge.

The Stand:No Man's Land 4. Harold set's off the bomb. Fans of the Stand will know what that means. The rest of you live life in a closet of sadness.

Superman 711. Superman and Jimmy olsen fight Livewire in Las Vegas. As tedious as it sounds.

X-Men Legacy 248. In the aftermath of the Age of X story, Emma offers to mindwipe the false memories of everybody involved. But a few of the X-Men choose to retain those memories for a variety of personal reasons. Those who decided against will presumably become the basis of the new team going forward. Including Magneto, Rogue, Gambit, Frenzy, Legion, and Professor X. Great reading.

X-Men 10 and 11. Needed a couple of extra issue to round out to 20. I had been avoiding this series since its inception, but I figured to give it a chance. Neither issue really rocked me, so I feel justified in continuing to not purchase this series. Especially when it's $3.99 an issue.

Zartan?

With Cobra Commander 1 (???) dead, who is left who knows who he is in the IDW-verse? If Baroness discovers he was re-created, she'd obviously have an appreciation for combining her greatest assassin with the shapechanging abilities, but I don't recall her finding out, and doing it behind the scenes would be a major cop-out.

At this point we don't know about more than half the potential replacements, so any one of them could be working with Zartan(hell, one of them could BE Zartan and that will come out during the story). Krake, Vikrim Khallikhan, Oda Satori, and Rodrigo Vargas are unknowns. Baroness, Bludd, and Xamot we are familiar with. Destro and Serpentor aren't officially candidates per the council, but will 'crash' the party at some point. Considering this crossover lasts an unprecedented 8 issues thru three different series, there's lots of room for WTF moments.

Chux, the newer soft editions of the Masterworks are coming out quickly, catching up to the hardcovers. I'd imagine they'll all be available in trade by the end of next year. I will provide you a link of what's included in each volume - they have done a really amazing job of reproducing a HUGE PERCENTAGE of the 12cent superhero stuff, and have branched off into the eras before and after. All I care about grabbing in this format is the 12cent superhero stuff. The drawback to getting Masterworks is that you don't get any letters pages (they do toss in the odd unused cover or pinup, which is nice).

NOTE - The first link shows the entire collection so far, the second link shows what has been re-released in tpb format. IF, for whatever reason, you are concerned about having "first printings" or "first editions" in your other book buying endeavors, I HIGHLY recommend not seeking them in Marvel Masterworks as the reproductions (both line art & coloring) have been updated a few times over the years. The newer the better - oh, and any of the trade paperback versions will have the most recently updated art & color, they've only been coming out for about a year.... maybe a tad longer.

Hardcovers - full collection.

Softcovers - you can see they're well on their way to catching up with the important stuff.

Oh, and scroll down from the "numbered variants" bit (they have been made to look like the "marbled" cover versions of the hardcover books, which were the original versions and were made into limited variant editions as the run progressed), the regular versions of the softcovers look awesome - they are jet black with classic Kirby/Ditko art remade into new paintings:

i have the first four volumes of MM:ASM. they're the softcover gray border/inset cover versions, which i think were Barnes & Noble exclusives (they actually say the company name at the bottom of the spine.) i got them with my employee discount while living in NC, when i was working at the B&N in the southpoint mall in durham.

Yep, those were the first foray into softcover versions. I don't know anything about what version of the contents you got inside those, but I'm going to go ahead and suggest they're the re-colored (from the original Masterworks, which they kinda fucked up) to match the originals, produced in around 2003 or so. They're nice versions. I missed an ebay auction for volumes 1-5 on a last minute snipe attempt by about $1.50 and wanted to punch myself in the face.
