Iron Man

movies are cool. here is a place to talk about how cool they are. or maybe how much they suck, sometimes. like that fucking piece of shit 'mac and me'. worst fucking movie ever, a two-hour ad for fucking coca-cola.

Here you go mabs.

Last we reported, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had been waxed off the final cut of Iron Man, but fortunately that’s not the case. As MovieHole points out, Fury/Jackson does appear but not until after the surefire blockbuster’s end credits. He also delivers some spoiler-worthy dialogue .

This quote is also from MovieHole via an anonymous scribe…

“At the end of the credits, Stark comes home and finds Nick Fury in his living room -staring towards the window. He then turns to tell Stark he’s the not the only superhero in the world. Stark asks who he is, and Fury turns and says he’s “Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D, and I’m here to talk to you about The Avengers Initiative”.

Jackson is rarely better than when he’s staring out a window contemplating a diabolic future. Will the Avengers be forming like Voltron with Fav at the helm?

I saw it last night. I thought it was a kick-ass movie, for the most part. Robert Downey Jr was great as Tony Stark. The action was top-notch. My only real complaint was Gwyneth Paltrow. She didn't look like she took the role seriously. It's like she was sleepwalking through the movie, playing the standard cookie-cutter damsel in distress, which was really distracting to me.
anarky wrote:I just read comments on a scene after the closing credits that has a lot of people excited, and makes me think, "God damn, that is the most Snigtarded thing I've ever fucking heard of." It really could not be dumber if Peter Frampton walked out, mounted Tony Stark, and said, "I'm in you!!"
Spoiler Highlight:
Well, to be honest with you, I loved the end credits scene. Back when I read comic books, I read The Ultimates, and I was always a fan of Ultimate Nick Fury. And if the sequel can squeeze in not only the Avengers, but War Machine and Mandarin, then I think we're in for an awesome sequel. Just my two cents.

And besides, it's Sam MOTHERFUCKING Jackson!
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

It really sounds like the worst sort of fanboy pandering to me. Between that and the crossover with Hulk, it's like they're trying to build an Avengers franchise. Only, uh, their characters are at, what, six different studios?

The idea that the world is crawling with superheroes and somehow Iron Man didn't know about it is pretty laughable.

And need I remind you that Attack of the Clones had Samuel L Motherfucking Jackson, too, along with Christopher Lee and Natalie Portman, and it still was only marginally less painful than forcible sodomy from Michael Clarke Duncan?

That is exactly what they are doing. Most/all of the Avengers roster isn't being used by any studio - Marvel owns the rights to use them in movies.

If they do an Avengers movie, how will they have enough time to show the origins of each hero plus the villians?

That's my main problem with it. It's sacrificing a good movie for total pandering. Either the movie is going to be so crowded with origin stories and such that it will be unwatchable, or you have to have separate movies for everyone. In which case you get, say, a Hawkeye or Speedball movie. It kinda waters down the appeal your movies have with non-comics fans if you put out a lot of shitty ones about characters even fans aren't excited about. They'll be less likely to take a chance on everything you put out, especially if there are two a year.

This is not just regarding Marvel. I think the Justice League movie is one of the worst ideas ever. World's Finest, only with Superman and Batman (Routh and Bale), would be a much more logical approach. Insert Wonder Woman into it, and it's shit. It's not because I don't like her, but, for various reasons, it's too hard for people to take her seriously. She would absolutely have to have a phenomenal movie first to make people forget Linda Carter and the invisible jet and the lasso of truth and all that shit. But they're not going that route.

Why see 'Iron Man'?

Post by Newsbot »

Code: Select all

Bet you didn't think I was going to jump on the media bandwagon for this film. Here is my in depth report on why you should see Iron Man.

What's the Story?

Playboy billionaire Tony Stark redefines "mid-life crisis" when his business trip to Afghanistan ends in a terrorist abduction. His captors, hoping to put his genius to work (and not being exactly MENSA material themselves), give him a high-tech workshop and demand that he build them a super-weapon. Of course, he builds a suit of super-armor instead and uses it to escape. Meanwhile back in the States, a nefarious plot has hatched in his absence. What's a now-virtually-indestructable guy to do but foil it?

Three Good Reasons
1. Robert Downey, Jr.'s bad-boy reputation makes him the perfect guy to play this conflicted, unlikely superhero. Downey's clean, sober, fit, and ready to save the world.

2. The classic comic's 21st-century makeover consists of more than just trading Vietnam for Afghanistan. The plot's ethical shades of gray give it more dramatic weight than you'll find in a standard funny-book adapation.

3. Not convinced yet of Iron Man's gravitas? Try counting up the stars' Academy Award nominations. The cast of this little comic book movie has earned a total of seven Oscar nods.

Bet You Didn't Know
The Black Sabbath song "Iron Man" has nothing to do with the Marvel comic, but Paul McCartney wrote a song called "Magneto and Titanium Man" that mentions two of Iron Man's nemeses (Titanium Man of course, as well as the Crimson Dynamo).
Putting the broad back into broadcasting.

They've said before if they do an Avengers movie it's more than likely be: Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and Ant-Man (IIRC). Maybe one more. Two are already made, and the other three are already in some sort of development.

And it looks like Justice League has been totally scrapped (again).

Ant-Man? I don't dislike him, but, when he's not played for laughs, he's fifth-tier.

"Hey, Superman! This guy's got the strength of a human!!"

BTW, Newsbot, I'd hardly say the Batman series (minus those Schumacher abortions) lacks shades of grey or dramatic weight. And the cast of Dark Knight has a pretty good stack of Oscars, in addition to "nods." I'm not checking, but I think Freeman or Caine alone have more nominations than the entire cast of Iron Man combined.

i didn't feel well today and thus called in sick for work, but felt better by about 2pm to enjoy a matinee with the missus AND baby - that's right, 16 months old and she's seen her first movie. and it was a comic book movie, just for double-distinction. she was really pretty awesome throughout, too...

anyway, it fuckin' rocked. seriously, don't skip out on this one, it's definitely theater-worthy. while most of you disagree on my views of spider-man 3, if you don't take this next line to heart from a die-hard spidey fan, i don't know what will convince you: this was LIGHTYEARS better than spidey 3. seriously. and i really still love spidey 3.

vyn's shocking statements:

shocking statement #1: on par with Spider-man 1
shocking statement #2: better than X-men 1
shocking statement for those who liked Hulk (which includes me...): better than Hulk

this movie basically melded the best of the spider-man and hulk movies: some psychological/philosophical undertones with enough cool action to balance it out. i will admit, the leap to heroics was more plausible than it was in spider-man 1. while the "great power, great responsibility" will always be the classic call to action for spidey, the reasoning behind the armor in iron man is all the more realistic, due in part to the psychological/philosophical underpinnings about a man who sells killing devices for a living and makes millions off it. the comedic bits were perfectly done as well, not campy, not corny, but genuinely funny and rather original.

performances all around save for paltrow are top-notch. i've never thought of her as that great of an actress, so i'm not too disappointed by her performance. it was standard fare for what she brings to the table. downey, howard and bridges all bring their a-game. favreau shows a true love for both the comic and film media, as well as the uncanny ability to gain and lose weight at an astonishing speed. it must be his mutant power.

as for the after-credits scene...

to see the literal personification of ultimate nick fury is just too cool for words. the melding of classic marvel (the avengers), modern marvel (the initiative) and ultimate marvel (sam jackson as fury) is a master-stroke of product integration... from that little scene, someone who wanders into their local comic book store can register some sort of recognition to at least six books on the shelves. avengers? hey, here's "new," "mighty" and "classic" flavors... the initiative? hell ALL the books said that across the top for a good 6 months, and they're still available. not to mention the title "avengers: the initiative". nick fury? hey! that guy looks JUST like sam jackson! genius.

as for an avengers movie, i have one word (two? not sure if it counts...): x-men. it's the same thing. an ensemble cast that we're thrust into the middle of. they're not planning a solo movie for every member of the avengers, nor should they have to. get the heavy hitters (iron man: check. hulk: check. captain america: forthcoming.) out to the public conscious and mix them into the roster of "new" faces like thor, ant-man/giant-man, wasp, hawkeye, etc... they don't all need origins...

anyway, if you don't value my opinion anymore due to my affinity for spider-man 3, please don't let that color your reading of this account... my love for spider-man himself allows me to overlook any flaws in that film (and i see them, i'm not blind - i just choose to watch it for the fun stuff.) that said, i have very little love for iron man save for the ultimate version, and this movie made me consider picking up some iron man comics - despite the fact that i'm fully aware of the fact that he's currently douche numero uno of the marvel u at the moment.

and possibly stan lee's best cameo to date.

'nuff said.
Life is short. STUNT IT!
