New Bands

uh, y'know, the sounds that sound good together... sometimes... and sometimes sounds like the disgusting "squish squish" sound Slicker's mom makes whenever she walks

New Bands

Post by Ran »

Since the bulk of the music I've listened for the longest time has been Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Tool/Perfect Circle, Rush, Alice in Chains, and some other misc. rock from the 70s to the 90s. I figure I'd start looking to add to the rotation.

Anyone hear of a new band called Airbourne? They are from Australia and have an AC/DC sound to them. Well, the band sounds like AC/DC, but the singer doesn't. I only heard one song on the radio, but it sounded ok.

Any recommendations?

Haven't heard of them, but that sounds cool.

A "new" band of sorts that is really fucking amazing is Mudcrutch. They're not really new. They were actually the precursor to the Heartbreakers, and only recently reunited and recorded their first album, which is a lot like Tom Petty's more countrified material. The lineup is Tom Petty, Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, Tom Leadon, and Randall Marsh (so 60% Heartbreakers, the brother of one of the original Eagles, and a drummer).

Not really that new, but one that didn't get a lot of attention is the Thorns. It's a supergroup of sorts, with Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge, and Shawn Mullins doing the best CSNY impression this side of CSNY themselves.

Two soloists I dig are Pete Yorn (who I swear is the reincarnation of Bruce Springsteen brought back in time, or something--he's actually covered The Boss and topped him) and Shooter Jennings (the son of Waylon, who's a bit more rock-oriented... though his first album (Let's Put the 'O' Back in Country) was awesome and each studio album since has dropped pretty drastically in quality).

The only stuff I listen to from this century are Godsmack, Puddle of Mudd(some of it), AudioSlave and maybe a few other things. Most of it sucks ass.

Some days I feel like "the old guy" because I see a Top 20 countdown or flip it to XM20 or whatever its called and I have no fucking clue who any of these people are. Then I realize that they're pieces of shit and I have zero interest in finding out who they are. Seriously, how many bands can you think of from the past five years who were, at some point in time, lauded as "the shit" by any outlet? 10? 15? How many more albums/singles have they had since then? If you answered "more than 1" you're probably right, but America is pretty much a half billion people with AD/HD and we get sick of shit far quicker than we used to (I'm still not sure sure how Eddie Vedder and Co. still have jobs). Even if a band is more than a "one hit wonder" they don't get any more attention than that because people have already moved on to the next big thing.

meh.

I was talking to someone at work the other day and told her I know I'm old now because I think almost all new music sucks and music was better when I was a teenager.
I think I've purchased maybe four or five rock albums in the past five years (and those were two Velvet Revolvers, Dethklock - which almost doesn't count, Foo Fighter - which sucked, and Weezer - which also sucked).

And just hearing current rap/hip hop makes me angry. Seriously.

I used to sort of pride myself on my modern music knowledge. That is now at an all-time low.

Rap died in approximately 1997. It's been a fucking joke since. Aside from the Outkast and Black-Eyed Peas, there is nothing out there that even pretends to be different from early NWA, albeit with different beats. I love NWA, but even I know they probably couldn't have pulled off a third album without sounding like jokes.

I remember a few years ago hearing "It's Gettin' Hot in Herrre" for the first time. I was driving home. I had to call Mrs A so she could hear this piece of shit. Neither of us could believe it was a real song. I called her since I didn't think I'd ever have a chance to expose her to this masterpiece of badness.

Boy, was I wrong.

By the way, will someone PLEASE put Snoop Dogg out of his misery? The guy has been a fucking talentless twit coasting on the success of Doggystyle for almost twenty years now. Doggystyle was awesome, but it was with his very next album that it became crystal clear it was only awesome because of Dr Dre's involvement.

Kanye West is about as good as any rapper/producer there's been in a looooong time. Check out the Diamonds from Sierra Leone remix and "Flashing Lights" (easy to do if you have GTA IV). I don't care if the guy is weird, he had the balls to call out Bush on national TV, even if he looked scared as crap doing it and flubbed it somewhat. (apologies to any fans of the prez.) And he does pretend to be some sort of thug. He's a momma's boy and is just fine with it.

Gnarls Barkley is good as well, even if it got played out last summer. Ghostface has done some good stuff too, although it is kinda hit and miss.

As far as modern rock goes, I have a soft spot for Arcade Fire, although it is a bit pretentious. At least it doesn't sound like everything else, which I appreciate. They had a free concert the other week for an Obama rally nearby, but I had to miss it. :(
