The objective of the Kyoto Protocol is the "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system." Which sounds like a lot of hooey and brainy talk.
It's called Kyoto and there is also a city in Japan called Kyoto. Huh. Weird.
As of June 2007, 175 Parties have ratified the Protocol. Of these, 36 countries and the EEC are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions below levels specified for each of them in the treaty(representing over 61.6% of emissions from Annex I countries). Notable exceptions include the United States and Australia. One hundred thirty seven countries (137) have ratified the protocol, but have no obligation beyond monitoring and reporting emissions.
There is some debate about the usefulness of the protocol, and there have been some cost-benefit studies performed.
This Newsbot feels the Kyoto Protocol is a bad thing. Or it might not be. I don't know. All of this "scientific" stuff makes Newsbot's head hurt. If you have a push-up bra for me to model or something like that, I'm good to go. But all this "international" goofiness...WHOOSH! Ha ha, right over my head, I tell ya. In any case, support or protest the Kyoto Protocol as you see fit. I hope it goes away soon. Unless it's a good thing, then I hope it stays good and we get waffles for breakfast.
